Tjie Dollar Totalisator

The New South Wales State Treasury is inquiring into the desirability of a 5s totalisator being established in the paddock at Randwick. In conjunction with this, consideration is being given the possibility of dividends being paid to the nearest 3d. thus reducing the amount deducted from the investments of the public. When the idea of a 5s totalisator was originally submitted an objection • raised was that this would increase the, fractions retained by the A.J.C the i dividends being calculated to the nearest 6d. Now, however, all dividends are calculated on a 5s unit of investment. Permission for a 5s totalisator is a matter for the Government. The secretary of the A.J.C. (Mr Rowe) agrees that it is what the public wants. The Premier and Treasurer (Mr Stevens) admitted last session that in the existing circumstances it is possible for the fractions retained by the club to amount to Is lOd in every £1 invested. It was quite possible, he said, that in a period of 18 years the fractions retained by race clubs might have amounted to £400,000; Mr Stevens agreed that a possible deduction of Is lOd in the £1 was “an imposition that should no longer be permitted.” The question of altering the fractions may be dealt with when the Government s promised Bill to cut taxation on racing is introduced next month. A recommendation of the Cabinet sub-com-mittee on racing is that the total percentage (apart from fractions) deducted from the totalisator investments should be reduced from 12 i to 10 per cent., the Government taking 5 per cent, instead of 9, and the clubs 5 instead of 3J. With this alteration, however, the Treasury, instead of the clubs, would retain the "dividend fractions. Treasury officials estimate that in respect 'of all the metropolitan racing , clubs the fractions average from 1 1-3 to 2 per cent, of the amount invested. Ksar

The death has occurred in the United States of America of the French-bred champion racehorse and sire Ksar, aged 19 years. Ksar was a ‘ chestnut by Bruleur from Kizil Kourgan and a half-brother to the Australian sire Kenilworth. As a yearling Ksar was bought by M. E. Blanc, who died the following year, and his widow raced the colt. In three years he started 15 times and won 11 oi his races, being only once unplaced. Most of these events were the richest races in France, and his winnings were translated into English currency at £67,068, making him at that tune the world’s largest stake-earner. The real value of his winnings, however, is open to question, he having won his races before an understanding was arrived at between English and irench turf authorities concerning the values to be placed on stakes In foreign currency from time to time. As the American horse Sun Beau has amassed £78,488 in stakes, the question of supremacy does not arise. Ksar was an immediate success a the stud, being at the head, of the list in France in 1931 and well placed on five _ other occasions. He then was taken to the State of Virginia, in the United States, but did not long survive m that country, for he was bought only at the end of June. 1935. His purchasers were Messrs K. N Gilpin and A. b. Hewitt. The former, in association with Mr F. W. Armstrong, took the famous sire Teddy + from France ' to America. Among the most notable of the progeny of Ksar, who to the end of last year had won 300 races, were Tourbillon and Thor, both, like himself, winners of the French Derby. Ut Majeur. winner of the Cesarewitch, and Le Ksar.. winner of the Two Thousand Guineas" in England this year.
