BOWLING

By Jack

SEASON’S FIXTURES December 25, 27, and 28—Christmas Pairs Tournament. December 30, 31, January 2 and 3. Southland Centre’s tournament. January 10. —New Zealand Champion ship tournament (opening day). February 12.—South Otago Rink tour nament. Elderly Bowlers’ Day. February 28.—Four-rink Championshm final. March s.—Otago v. Southland, at Invercargill. March 10.—Otago v. Canterbury (Red path Shield). INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Glorious weather and fast greens were enjoyed by local bowlers on Saturday for the continuation of the interclub championship games. It was, in fact, the hottest Saturday experienced this season. Fairfield suffered its first reverse, going down to Brighton by 4 points, and now shares top position with Kaikorai, which defeated Caledonian in three sections and secured full marks. Fairfield and Kaikorai have now scored 48 championship points each. Kaituna defeated Opoho in two sections, and won two and lost one against West Harbour, and has now 40 4-5 championship points to its credit. Kaituna has now moved up to third place, which last week was occupied by Logan Park. Dunedin is close up with 40 points. Dunedin won five sections out of six, defeating Port Chalmers in two and winning three and losing one against Mornington. The odd section was lost by a single point. Taieri won one section, and went down in one against St. Kilda, and are now equal with Logan Park, Green Island, Caversham, and Brighton (36 points each) in fifth position. The following are the results of Saturday’s games, together with the championship points scored to date by each club:—

THE OPOHO GREEN The greenkeeper (Mr Morgan) has worked wonders with the Opoho green, and, although it is still in its infancy, it already presents a surface that ranks among the best in the centre. The work is really a labour of love with Mr Morgan, and the club is particularly fortunate in having him in charge of the green. Picturesquely situated and with a charming view of the adjacent bush and hills, the Opoho green should not lack for visitors. NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT The continued spell of dry weather is causing an anxious time for the greenkeepers, who . are naturally anxious to have their greens in the best of order for the big Dominion bowls carnival, which will be opened here on January 10.. Artificial watering of course, assists them, but a thorough rain soaking is Intending players are reminded that entries dose for the tournament tomorrow.

SKATING RINK OR BOWLING GREEN

Members of the Onehunga Bowling Club who visited the green one day recentS a°re inclined to the belie tha a bull in a china shop is a tar less damaging agent than steers S’fnlerffthe grinds t the“sate that connects with a neighbour’s garden, and the drover’s dogs, with the Unfortunately thfs poUcy led g fo disastrous results, only too evident on the three greens ?n deep scars varying in J e P gt v f , f Ui™ 3 feet to 3 yards. The dogs had virtually caused the steers to make a skating rink of the whole area, instead of letting them walk out m ., f. fashion and the greens suited the pur pose admirably, owing to the ram during the night having created a slippery surface on the hard and compact soil Incmiries elicited the information that a rather large herd was being driven to Westfield from somewhere m the Kaipara direction, and that these lew had broken away from the mob and turned into a side street. The dogs apparently did their duty in rushing away to head them, but too late to stop them from slipping through the first front gate that was open wh h gave them a clear run into the bowling property, with the dogs barkmg behind them The greenkeeper, Mr Preston. assisted by willing members, prompt y set about making repairs, and the ram

at the end of the wek effected such a transformation that very little damage was visible to the eye when the pennant games were played.

A CORRECTION Owing to an error in one of the score cards Anderson’s Bay were credited with a win in each rink in the fourrink game against Tainui, whereas the latter was ahead in one rink, Laurie defeating Robertson by 21 points to 17. The total scores were Anderson’s Bay 99. Tainui 54. ALEXANDRA TOURNAMENT The Alexandra Club, in preparation for its Christmas tournament, has already got its programme out. CENTRAL OTAGO NOTES With the temperature just on 100 on Saturday, the Central Otago players going to Australia might have appreciated it. but it was too hot for the majority. One prominent Alexandra skip got right down to his athletic singlet. The Alexandra green is in capital order and should be in tip-top condition for the Christmas tournament. The Jolly Cup was made round to go round, which it did again last week, the Naseby rink (C. Hore, W. Anderson, S. Bolt. A, E. Brown 22) winning after a most exciting game against J Holt, N. Paulin. E, W. George. P. D. Edmonds (19). the scores being 19 all on the twentieth head. The first challenge to the Bannockburn Club for the Digger Cup was played on Thursday evening, the Alexandra Club rink (R. McKissock, J. Watt, A. Milne, J. Timmings 21) defeating the holders (T, Crabbe, S. Wells, W. Young, A. Stuart 16). The winners got a four in the last head. Cromwell has the first challenges in for both cups. Otago Ladies Bowling Association, North-East Valley v. Logan Park, Mornington v. St. Kilda, Port Chalmers v. Otago, St. Clair v, Opoho. Dunedin a bye. The draw for next Saturday’s Hislop Cup matches is as follows:—Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association v. West Harbour, Roslyn v. Dunedin, Otago v. Logan Park, North-East Valley v. St. Kilda, Kaikorai v. Results of last week’s Hislop Cup matches are:—Green Island beat Porto bello, Kaikorai beat Logan Park, Caversham beat North-East Valley, Otago beat West Harbour, St, Kilda beat Roslyn, Leith and Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association did not play. The annual match for the Haub Cup between Caversham and St, Clair was played on Caversham green on Friday last. After a very enjoyable game Cav ersham proved the winners. The pre sident of the St. Clair Club (Mrs Sparrow) congratulated Caversham, and presented the cup to Mrs Seymou(president of Caversham Club) to which the latter suitably replied. The post-sectional games, semi-finais, and finals of the Singles tournamen' were completed on Tuesday on the association’s greens at Logan Park. The weather was ideal, but later in the day a north-easterly wind blew across the green, and made play rather difficult, especially in the final game, Still, the spectators witnessed some splendid bowling, and in passing may I mention a remark made by a well-knov.m bowler (who was an interested spectator): “ I have never seen such a wonderful display of bowling.” The final game was very close until the thirteenth head when Mrs Lister (St. Kilda) drew ahead, and on the sixteenth head the score was 20—10 in favour of Mrs Lister. On the eighteenth head Mrs Austin scored a 4 which reduced the lead, then another single on the nineteenth to Mrs Austin. On the twentieth head Mrs Lister scored a single which put her 5 up and one to go. Congratulations to Mrs Lister on her great display. In her four games yesterday she was never at any time extended, and deserved the honour of being the Singles champion for 1937-38 To Mrs Austin, also congratulations must be given as she played three very fine games. And, as runner-up in the Singles tournament she has a very creditable position.
