MANCHESTER UNITY

On Saturday last a fraternal visit was paid to Loyal Upper Clutha Lodge, Pembroke, by a party consisting of Prov. D.G.M. Bro. W. Sellar, Prov. C.S. Bro. J. A. Hopcroft, Prov. Treas. Bro. A. Sligo, P.P.G.M.'s Bros. R. S. Black, S. Jack and A. D. Cameron, P.G.'s Bros. S. Macdonald and Masters, and N.G. Bro. Truesdale. Transport difficulties were, overcome through the courtesy of the Prov. G.M. (Bro. P. W. Stabb). The number of visitors was augmented by a small contingent of Cromwell brethren. The meeting, conducted by Bro. S. Kane, gave the visitors* a rousing welcome. One member was initiated into the Order. Bros. Truesdale, Macdonald, Masters, Cameron and Jack conducted the ceremony, and gave the members of Upper Clutha a demonstration of the correct rendition of the ritual. Business having been dispensed with, the meeting resolved itself into a social function. Numerous toasts were honoured, and musical and elocutionary items rendered. Some 50 members altogether participated in a very fine gathering. „ , ... The attendance of members at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Princess Mary, presided over by N.G. Sister J. Duncan, was good. One candidate for membership was initiated, and nominations were opened for office-bearers for the ensuing term. The resignation from office of Sister A. Leather was received with regret. On the adjournment of the lodge, trump whist was played, the winners being Sisters Wright and Swan and Bros. A. Cameron and R. Thompson.

The meeting of Loyal Caversharn opened in mourning, owing to the death of Bro. C. W. Taylor. The secretary's action in forwarding expressions of sympathy to the relatives was endorsed. Bro. Lynch, who is leaving shortly for Siam, received the felicitations of the lodge on his promotion. Two members were admitted on transfer from the juvenile branch. Notification was received of a meeting of the Picnic Committee on December 9. Nominations were opened for officers and various committees for /the term commencing in January. The N.G., supported by the permanent secretary, extended a welcome to P-l*. Bro. Croft on his return from a trip to England. The attention of members was drawn to the meeting of Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge when elderly members would be entertained, and also to the meeting of Loyal Prince of Wales (Port Chalmers), when this lodge would entertain P.P.G.M. Bro. Crawford at a complimentary social on his attainment of 50 years' membership in the Order. The juvenile branch of Loyal Caversharn held its annual summoned meeting and election of officers in the lodge room. A fine attendance greeted NG Bro. Clarke. This juvenile branch has made wonderful progress, increasing its membership by 36 during the past six months. To Bro. J. Smith falls the honour of haying introduced 21 of these during the term mentioned. The Juvenile Council was represented by president Bro. M. Isaac, VP Bro. McLaren, P.G.M. Bro. L. Huntly, and I.P.P.G.M. Bro E. Hey. Competition for office was keen the results being: N.G., Bro. J. Cook; V.G., Bro. R. Powley; E.S., Bro. E., Munro; warden, Bro. J. Manson; guardian. Bro. J Smith; G.M., Bro. S. Clarke The installing officer was assisted by Sisters Douglas and Smith and members of the male lodges. P.G. Bro.. D. Yates had the distinction of installing his grandson into office. At the next meeting of the lodge the juveniles will entertain their parents and friends. W.M Bro. J. Roberts presided over the monthly meeting of the Past Grands' Lodge. Bro. H. Masters acted as secretary. Though the attendance was somewhat meagre, the meeting proved highly interesting, and from the discussion which ensued prospects of the lodge's activities in the New Year would appear to be very bright indeed. A prepared question box was done full justice to, after which a free discussion regarding the activities of the lodge was indulged in. as an outcome of which a small committee was formed to prepare a report to be submitted at the annual meeting. Information regarding the formation of a provincial lodge of past grands was received and discussed, the final consideration being deferred until the annual meeting.
