The Vauxhall Handicap was run in two divisions, and speculation was not up to expectations, the pool being £954 less than last year. Little-fancied horses were successful in both divisions. Tiverton winning the first and Miss Mestor the second. Both paid double figures and scored only by narrow margins. Tiverton led throughout in her division and won from Ivy Willonyx, who finished strongly near the extreme outside of the course. A few who were evidently under the impression that

Ivy Willonyx had won protested noisily against the decision, but from the press stand there appeared no doubt that the judge's placings were correct.

The second division provided another exciting finish, and Miss Mestor reached the front about a furlong from the post to win from Beverley, who came home well after beginning slowly and being a long way back. Pasture made another creditable showing for third, failing to begin quite as well as on the first day. Tuinui also shaped respectably, and Poker Dice, who is green, displayed plenty of pace after losing a lot of ground. It was with a good finishing effort on the rails that Land Girl won the Stanley Handicap, to pay a solid price. She was very patiently ridden by R. W. McTavish, who saved every inch of ground to come with a well-timed run and win narrowly from Racette. The latter was in the rear in the middle stages and also made a fine finishing run, in spite of the disadvantage of coming very wide in the straight. Requiem and Glen Abb had a great tussle for third after fighting hard for the lead at the distance, and the former just gained the honour. The light-weight Kilberis won the Kawau Hurdles in good style from the place favourite Trackman. Kilberis was patiently ridden by N. C. Trillo, and after being steadied in behind the pacemakers in the middle stages finished too well for Trackman, who attempted to win all the way. Trackman has been racing consistently, but unluckily, and a win for him would be well deserved. He pulled up sore. Simint, after going with Trackman in the middle stages, weakened into Produced at the top of his form, Dark Shadow registered another fine performance in winning the St. Andrew's Handicap, for which Mazir and Kiltowyn were better fancied on the win machine. When he scored in the Alison Cup, Dark Shadow was in front nearly all the way, but to-day there were only three horses—Jonathan, lybalt, and Crooning—behind him during most of the running. However, when the field passed the false rail at the foot of the straight he shot through quickly and won nicely from Kiltowyn, who came home strongly on the rails Round Up, always handy, bade a good showing for third, and Mazir was fourth. Mazir was forced to cover a lot of ground and was on the outside most of the journey. Jonathan failed to run to form, and Shy tired after being one of the leaders at the home .turn. The top-weights, Te Hero and Arvakur, proved themselves a class above the others in the Rakino Handicap. Arvakur established a nice lead after jumping out very smartly from near the rails, and with two furlongs covered had a break of three lengths from Te Hero who made amends for his defeat on the first day by finishing resolutely and winning narrowly. Arvakur looked and galloped better than he did when beaten at Te Rapa, and maintained his record for consistency. He battled on gamely at the finish, but Te Hero was a little too good. Although he went down scratchily in his preliminary, Marie's Acre was all the better for his race on the first day, and he justified his favouritism for the Pupuke Plate by winning in fine style. Marie's Acre was in the lead practically throughout, and was always goinr like a winner, even though High Sea challenged strongly in the straight. High Sea is on the improve, and ran his best race to date. Melvanui shaped creditably for third, and Winlona was fourth. The second fancy, Du Maurier, disappointed by failing to run on after being prominent most of the way. Marie's Acre has many of the characteristics of his brilliant half-sister, Gay Blonde, but is a more robust type. He is subject to soreness, but looks like being good if he remains sound. Favoured with a beautiful run on the rails, the each-way favourite Palustre came through in the straight to score narrowly in the Ngataringa Handicap. She followed Farland, Galilee, and Anion until about a furlong from the post, and then made an effort to win from Farland, who fought on very courageously. Peter Beckford came from a good way back to get third, and Galilee was a very close fourth. Bachelor King displayed brilliant speed in the middle stages, and should do better in the near future. It was with a fine finishing run that Cappy won the Cautley Handicap, for which Jack Tar was the win favourite and Lady Meath was first fancy for a place. The supporters of Lady Meath were on good terms with themselves when she came into the straight going well in the lead with Ellanui, but she weakened slightly in the last furlong, and was decisively beaten by Cappy, who finished attractively. Gold Vaals ran on strongly to gain third, and Strathire indicated that he is returning to form by finishing fourth. The win favourite JacK Tar was handy at the turn, but hung out badly in the straight and was well beaten.
