LEVEL CROSSINGS

ELIMINATION CAMPAIGN FULL PROGRAMME PLANNED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. "We have talked for donkeys' years about the need for eliminating dangerous railway crossings; we have come to the conclusion that it is time to knock off talking and pet on with the job," said the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) during the discussion on the Public Works Estimates in the House of Representatives to-night. Mr Semple said he made no apology for the amount of money the Government was spending on railway crossings, some of which he claimed were death traps. Since 1925. Mr Semple said, no fewer than 198 persons had been killed in level crossing accidents, and 414 had been seriously injured. After a careful investigation the department had decided that 250 of the crossings were dangerous. It was true that accidents had not occurred on all of them, but the policy now was to prevent loss of life and not wait until someone was killed before action was considered necessary.
