MONTHLY MEETING PREPARATIONS FOR SHOW The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago A. and P. Society was held on Thursday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs J. Hellyer (in the chair), F. J. Conn, J. Mitchell, R. A. S. Cantrell, A. C. Begg, B. S. Irwin, K. Clark, J. E. Brunton, J. Allison, W. S. Thomson, E. M. North, D. Ireland, W. Lee, J. M. Fraser, S. Bowman and J. A. Fowler. Before commencing the business of the meeting the chairman referred to the death of Mrs J. D. Christie, of Mosgiel. A resolution of sympathy was carried in the usual manner. The following were proposed and unanimously elected members of the society:—Miss Joyce McGill (Hyde), Messrs J. F. Hayhurst (Temuka), J. Howie (Milton), G. Masters (Caversham), and W. Kennedy (Otautau). SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £203 2s 4d. The Bank balance was £595 7s 7d in credit, and outstanding cheques amounted to £l3 10s. It was reported that on November 15 Messrs Dalgety and Co. had taken over Brydone Hall, and Messrs Stronach, Morris the Agricultural Hall for the wool season. A report was received from the special committee set up to go into the question of a further lease of Tahuna Park to the Otago Rugby Football Union, and it was decided to leave this matter in the hands of the sub-committee. The Grounds and Buildings Committee reported that the facing of the cattle pens at Tahuna Park had been renewed and painted, and the roof levelled up. The new loading bank was finished, and repairs and maintenance carried out ready for the show. The tender of Mr E. Longworth had been accepted for the painting of the caretaker’s house, and this work was now in progress. The Light Horse Committee met twice during the month and drew up the programmes for the night carnivals to be held on both nights of the show, and recommended that Mr Brunton and Mr Murdoch take charge of the night events. The committee in charge of the sideshows will meet at Tahuna Park to arrange the allotment of space prior to the show. GENERAL The secretary reported on the ewe hogget competitions in the Wakatipu, Millers Flat and Kelso districts, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr D. Middleton and Mr W. A. Yardley for their services as judges in these districts. A donation of £2 2s from Mr H. G. Warren for the best New Zealandbred two-year-old filly and a special prize of £ 1 given by Mr John Trotter, of Oamaru, for the maiden competition for the maiden dog gaining most points in the dog trials were received with thanks. Mr A. Grant, of Waimate, advised that owing to an important meeting on Tuesday he would be unable to act as judge at the show. His son was appointed in his place. It was noted that arrangements for the export lamb competition were well under way and a good field day at the New Zealand refrigerating Company’s works at Burnside on December 18 is assured. The president reported on the arrangements that had been made for the supply of grass for feed at the show and these were considered satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr W. I. Nichol, of Allanton, for supplying sheep for the dog trials, which had saved the society the expense of bringing these from Warepa. An application for the right to sell sweets round the ground at the show was left to the secretary to deal with. The Commercial Travellers’ Association was granted the use of Tahuna Park free of charge for its annual picnic for the citv orphanages. Correspondence regarding the sound system for the show was considered and left to the secretary to attend to, as was the application from 4ZB to broadcast from the show.
