CHRISTIAN CONGREGATIONS
QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations was held on Thursday evening. A letter was received from the Otago Rugby Football Union in reply to the council’s criticism of the excessive drinking about the grounds and amongst patrons who attended the Otago-Southland shield football match. The letter expressed entire sympathy with the views of the council and detailed the steps that had been taken to prevent a repetition of the incidents complained of. Messrs D. K. McDonald and John Wilson were re-appointed delegates to the Dunedin Vocational Guidance Committee. The Rev. W. A. Hamblett reported that with the president he had attended a preliminary meeting called to discuss Red Cross relief work for China. He announced that a public meeting would be held in the Concert Chamber on the evening of November 28 to organise the reception of funds and to take other steps that may be necessary. Mr Downie Stewart would address the meeting as also would a member of the Chinese community. An appeal is meanwhile to be made for clothing of all sorts for China, and shipping will be provided free for all parcels despatched. It was reported that there was still one school in the city that would not permit any opening religious exercises under the permission accorded by the Otago Education Board.
