Now let us glance over a few photographs taken in the Morris Works, and see some of the testing operations* THE WEATHER MACHINE Specimens of paint, robber and external materials are sprayed with water and “ grilled ” in a heat equal to the strongest sunlight. B CATHODE RAY TEST What is happening inside the engine ?—Engineers always want to know that. This apparatus shows the actual pressure variations of the burning gases in the cylinder, even when the engine is running at full speed. C “SEEING” STEEL BY LIGHT The steeloscope determines the exact composition of steels. The operator can tell by what he observes of the effect of an electric arc on the part under test, exactly the composition of the steel. TESTING TEMPERATURES This thermo-couple enables a tester to check the temperatures at six points in an engine at the same time. AND THE FINAL TESTS-ON THE ROAD Apart from factory tests, Morris cars are tested on the worst roads and under the worst conditions that can be found.
