THE Otago Daily Times. “ Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DNNEDIN, TUESDAY, NOV, 20, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The Isabella, brig, which sailed on Wednesday last for the Mauritius, had on board 1020 bags of wheat and 1426 bags. of oats, shipped by Messrs Dalgety, Rattray, and Co. The Isabella brought a cargo of sugar here, and now returns to the Mauritius with the first shipment of New Zealand produce for that Island. A meeting of the ratepayers of Bell Ward was held last evening, at the Royal George Hotel, to take into consideration the excessive rate of 2s 8d in the £ proposed to be levied by the City Council. . . During the month the apprehensions which were communicated by last mail of another general rising amongst the Natives nave been very much strengthened. It will be premature yet to state decidedly that there is an organised rising throughout the island south of Auckland; but that the Natives are disaffected in many different parts of the four Northern Provinces, that large armed parties are wandering about, and that mischief is threatened, much in the old style, are patent facts! The Europeans have little chance, for the Natives disappear when it suits them, and fight only when they please. There have been one or two skirmishes of not much moment. The whole of the Colonial forces are out, and the troops are once more lending assistance. As so much against the "regulars” has been written, it is only fair to place on record an account of their doings, which is said to be perfectly authentic. A mixed force, consisting of some Kupapa Natives in front, the Native Contingent and some portion of the Colonial forces following, and the 18th Royal Irish bringing up the rear, met some rebels unexpectedly. At the first volley the Kupapas fell back, the Contingent became panic stricken, the Colonial forces, fearing something desperate was up, “ skedadled ” into the bush right and left; while the 18th stood for an opening to let the rush of friendly Natives pass them, and then closing up as steadily as though they were taking part in a sham fight. The story may be exaggerated, but it is certain the Governor has written to the effect that the Royal Irish “behaved splendidly ’ The Goldfields continue to give large yields in proportion to the population employed in mining. Discoveries of mineral wealth are continually being made : the Agricultural prospects of the Province are encouraging, and nothing is wanted but labor to ensure its rapid development. There is ample room and employment for thousands more than at present inhabit the Province. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Four sailors have been sentenced to three months’ hard labor for intimidating another, who had agreed to ship under current rates. GOLD STATISTICS.
