SHARP UPWARD TREND CONVICTIONS FOR DRUNKENNESS From Our Parliamentary Reporter' WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. “The sharp upward trend during the last two years in the figures for the more serious offences of dangerous and negligent driving, drunk in charge and excessive speed, are not reassuring,” states the annual report of the Transport Department, which was presented to the House of Representatives to-day by the Minister of Transport iMr R. Semple). The report showed that for negligent or dangerous driving 3553 convictions were recorded during 1936, compared with 2890 for the previous year. For being drunk in charge of vehicles there were 492 convictions, against 335 for the previous year. Excessive speed was responsible for 1697 convictions, compared with 1352 The total convictions for the year under all charges was 16,693. against 15.303 in 1935.
