GAMBLING ENCOURAGED

THE EFFECT OF ART UNIONS METHODIST SYNOD’S CONCERN (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 18. Concern over the effect of art unions in encouraging gambling was expressed by the North Canterbury Methodist Synod, and two resolutions were passed, one recommending the Methodist Conference to urge the Government to withhold permits for art unions, and the other drawing the attention of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) to what was claimed to amount to circumvention of the city by-laws in the selling of art union tickets in doorways on streets. “I do not know whether it is generally known, but quite a lot of our own members go in for art unions and talk about what they will do with the money if they win it.” said Mr H. Chapman. The chairman (the Rev. Clarence Eaton) said that he hoped it was on something charitable and worthy. Mr Chapman said he had not heard anyone say so. It left the church open to - charge of hypocrisy if it protested against art unions and could not bring its own people to order. Mr Frank Thompson referred to the selling of art union tickets in doorways, saying that the Minister should be asked to put a stop to it, as it was circumventing the prohibition by the City Council of selling art union tickets in the streets
