NOTES FROM RICCARTON

• (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 17. The Southland trainer R. McNay, who has been at Riccarton since August with three horses, will return home tomorrow with his team. The southern visitor made many friends during his stay but it was an unlucky trip. Wild Career was in a place more than once, and scored the team’s only win at Rangiora on Labour Day. Easily his best performance, however, was his second to Pelmet in the Criterion Handicap at Riccarton last week. Unfortunately he had a mishap on the eve of the Canterbury Jockey Club s meeting. It was thought at the time that the injuries were of a minor description but the horse was slightly lame on the day of the Criterion Handicap while a veterinary examination later on showed that the trouble was more serious than had been realised He may require a good spell, and at present it looks as if he will have to miss the Christmas and New Year racing. His trainer intends to give the horse time to make a complete recovery, but has hopes of bringing him back to Riccarton next Easter. Rodcur disappointed several times in her spring racing. She showed speed, but failed in stamina. It is probable the firm tracks did not suit her, as her training gallops suggested that she was capable of better than she

showed in her races, but she may do much better later in the seasdn, as she is very well. Ardmayle had his only race in the Strowan Plate, in which he was prominent a good way. Horses by Balboa usually require plenty of time, and McNay is sanguine that Ardmayle will repay all the attention he has received. Several Riccarton jockeys will travel this week to meetings in different parts of the Dominion. Three will leave to-morrow for the Waikato meeting, where A. E. Ellis will ride Scotland. A Messervy will be on Sulieman. and R, Beale will handle the hurdler Patagonia. C. T. Wilson will go north to ride at Levin on Saturday, with Sigurd, Cricket, and Beau Gallante among his mounts. Other local horsemen will make a trip south for the Invercarigll meeting on Saturday. J. W. Jennings has several mounts, including Milford and Viking. E. Rosewarne will ride Wonderful, Sailing Lady, and Sea Lady, while J. McFarlane has an engagement for Ocean Singer. The Gainscourt gelding Windward was sold at the close of the Riccarton carnival to a Hokitika owner. He has been left in the meantime with A. McMullan, who will race him in the high-weight event at Ashburton next week. Windward is in good order, and may soon pay his way for his new owner. S Barr has taken Vitaphone in hand again after a spell. Vitaphone should be a useful horse for holiday racing. Bright Prospect, a six-year-old by Weathervane, has been acquired by a patron nf the stable, and looks in good fettle for early racing.
