NONAGENARIAN’S PLIGHT
An unenviable experience befell Mr John Andrew Butler, aged 90, of Gisborne, on Tuesday, when he attempted to walk across the Taruheru River in the vicinity of Atkinson street, and his legs became securely wedged in the mud. His plight was first noticed by a boy about 3 p.m., but the lad did not take particular notice of the incident, end did not mention the fact to his father until at tea. The father proceeded immediately to the point indicated by his son and found the old man in the last stages of exhaustion. Mr Butler was attended by a doctor and ordered to the Cook Hospital, where he is still under observation. Until July last, Mr Butler was an inmate of the Memorial Home, and since then has been living in a “ bach ” with two old-age pensioners.
