Sketch plans for the proposed extensions to Upper Studholme House had been submitted to the committees. These plans provided accommodation for 70 students in addition to the 20 at present accommodated, the estimated cost being £23,000.™1t was resolved that the plan be submitted to the Works Committee for report to the next meeting of the Finance and Home Science Committees. Galway, lecturer in music, stated that the number attending the various classes in the Department of Music during the last session were:—Harmony 14, counterpoint 8, composition 10, form and orchestration 4, history and musical appreciation 35. "The outstanding examination success was attained by Mr T. Vernon Griffiths M.A., Mus. 8., who was successful in the examinations for the degree of Doctor of Music," the report continued. "This is the second occasion only that the degree has been awarded by the University of New Zealand. In addition, Miss Evelyn Harvey and Miss Marna Service graduated as Bachelors of Music. The examination results in the earlier stages of the degree course were also satisfactory. In the examination in music for the B.A. degree four students were successful.

"The Carnegie electric gramophone and records were again used as far as the timetable of the modern languages room would allow, and a gratifying interest was shown by students of all faculties in the programmes presented. I would like this opportunity of urging that a suitable sound-proof room should be provided in which the music classes could be held, and in which the gramophone and records could be available for demonstration purposes at all times, and not be restricted to the lunch hour and to one evening a week. It is not possible for us to obtain the full benefit from this equipment until such accommodation is provided. "The prize given by the Women's Society of Musicians was again won by Mr Colin Oliver, and I have recommended that the bursary in music be awarded to Mr Douglas Kennedy."
