THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15. 1861.] DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, NOV. 17, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The unfavorable weather yesterday morning prevented the commencement of the shooting in the friendly match between 21 Volunteers of Otago and an equal number of Sydney men. Should the weather be still unfavorable this morning, the shooting will take place on Monday and Tuesday mornings next. Mr Thomas Dick has resigned his seat in the House of Representatives, in accordance with the understanding arrived at with his constituents at Port Chalmers. Mr Dick offers himself a candidate for re-election. The "Waikouaiti Herald" of Wednesday says:—"Two magnificent Merino rams, rising four years old, have for some months past been in the possession of C, Harvey, Esq., Hawksbury House, Waikouaiti, imported from America to this Province by Messrs Bates, Sise, and Co., Dunedin, from whom they were purchased at the rather stiff figure of LIBO. On Thursday last Mr Harvey had the two rams shorn and their fleeces weighed. . . The fleece of 'General Grant' was first placed in the scales, and on adjusting them it was found to weigh exactly eighteen pounds, and that of his companion eleven pounds and aquarter, thus weighing together twentynine pounds and a-quarter. The fleeces were, of course, in their grease, but the marked difference in weight between them was accounted for from the fact that the ram with the light fleece had the previous day got into a water-hole, and the wool was conseauently much cleaner than the heavy fleece. The quality of the wool of both fleeces was fine and silky, and was in splendid condition. . . ." (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The Commodore has returned from the Front. It is rumored that there is estrangement between the Governor and the General. There has been no more fighting lately. The Governor is at Wanganui. He transhipped the baggage of himself and Suite last night, intending'to go to Taupo. The Lord Ashley reports the appearance of a large body of Hau-haus at Tauranga. The troops are under arms. At Napier, the Militia and Volunteers are again turned out, in consequence of the threatened approach of the Hau-haus. THE ESCORT.
