The Lovell's Flat Women's Institute met on Wednesday afternoon, Miss Clarke presiding. The motto was, " He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything"; and the roll call, " Tongue twisters," which caused some amusement. Miss Anderson showed how* to make an attractive scarf from darned net. and a guessing competition arranged by Mrs K. Clark was won by Mrs Calder and Mrs Carxuthers (equal). The hostesses were Mrs Kerr and Miss. Mavis Joyce.
The October meeting of the Taieri Institute was held on Thursday last in the Kinmont Hall. The motto was, " May we never, be too busy to help a friend." The president, Mrs Williamson, was in the chair. . Calls -tor help " was the roll call. Mrs Smelhe read an interesting article for the Golden Thread. The competition—"A jar of marmalade"—was won by Mrs Smellie. There was a successful sixpenny bring-and-buy sale, in aid of the institute funds. An instructive demonstration was given by Miss Smellie on the making of flowers from wood fibre. The hostesses .were Mes»dames Fergusson, Hamilton,; Taylor, A. Johnstone, and F. Sftieaton.
The Puerua Institute met on Octo<ber 20, with Mrs G. Grant, vice-presi-dent, presiding. The motto was,' The mill will never grind with the water that is past." Mrs P. Renton (Mosgiel) gave an interesting talk on Narcissi culture." A competition, "Spring flowers," was judged by Mrs Renton. Mrs Renton also answered the roll call, "Gardeningqueries." The hostesses were Mrs G. Grant and Miss S. Mason. The members celebrated their sixth birthday in the local hall. j Mrs P. S. Grant (president) welcomed all present. The following rendered musical items: Misses E. and A. Reed (Romahapa), pianforte duet; Miss Roa Craigie, Mrs George Craigie (Owaka), and Mr Russell Jackman (Romahapa) vocal solos; Mrs G. Grant (Puerua), pianoforte solo; Miss Roa Craigie, recitation; Mrs lan Dallas (Barclutha), xylophone solos; Mr J. Beatty (Waitepeka), bagpipe selections; Misses E. and A. Reid, vocal duet; Mrs Dippie (Paretai W. 1.), Mrs Reins (Kaka Point W. 1.), Miss E. Ayson (Warepa W.L), Miss Mason (Benhar W. 1.), Miss E. Reed (Romahapa bis.), and Miss Roa Craigie (Owaka Dis.), and Miss Dallas (Balclutha) made speeches. A popular feature of the evening was a chain waltz danced to a bagpipe selection' by Mr J. Beatty.
