STATE HOUSING
PROGRESS OF ORAKEI SCHEME THIRTY BUILDINGS COMPLETED (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Oct. 27. With the rapidity of mushrooms, houses continue to appear on Orakei slopes as the Government's housing scheme progresses. A total of 170 buildings are either structurally complete or in the course of erection, and with a start made in the laying out of the grounds the ultimate appearance of the area may be readily envisaged. Save for the installation of electric power and the requisite fittings, 30 of the houses are now completed, and when the electricians have finished their work within a few weeks they will be ready for occupation. However, no closing date for applications from prospective tenants has been announced by Mr J. A. Lee, Parliamentary Under-secretary in Charge of Housing Construction, and no information as to the time up to which applications will be accepted could be furnished by the Auckland office of the State Advances Corporation to-day. It is regarded as impossible, to predict the time likely to elapse between the closing of applications and the granting of possession to the selected tenants However it seems probable at the present juncture that a considerable proportion of the houses will be available for occupation some time before departmental formalities are completed.
