JUBILEE OF LODGE

LOYAL BAND OF FRIENDSHIP CELEBRATIONS AT KAKANUI Celebrations in connection with the •ixty-fiith anniversary of the founding of the Loyal Band of Friendship Lodge, Kakanui, were held during the weekend, commencing with a banquet in the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday night, when there was a large gathering of members of the lodge and visiting brethren from Dunedin, Oamaru, and Central Otago. P.G. Bros. C. Leen presided, and, after extending a welcome to the Visitors, he called on P.C. Bro. C. Hi Russell to take charge of the proceedings. Taylor); "Medical Officers" .(P.G. Bro. T. G. Tyson—Per. Sec. Bros. W. Couper); "Pioneers" (P.P;G.M. Bro. Sligo—P.G. Bro. T, McLennan—P.G. Bro. Wilson); "Our Guests" (P.G. Bro. J. A. McDonald— brethren. from Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, Loyal Oamaro? Lodge, Loyal Roxburgh Lodge, Loyal Caver•ham Lodge, Loyal Valley Lodge, Loyal Maniototo , Lodge, Loyal Centenary Lodge, Loyal Star of the North Lodge, Loyal Rose of the Valley Lodge, and the North Otago P.G. Lodge); "The Ladies " (P.G. Bro. W. G. Wilson—P.G. Sis. J. M'Cabe); "The Press" and the " Chairman."

Items, which added much to the plea•ure of the function, were contributed by Mrs Masters, Sis. Christie, and P.G. L. Dougherty (songs); Bro. R. J. Meldrum (piano and violin solos); PJP.G.M. Bro. S. H. Russell (recitations and humorous numbers). P.G. Bro. C. Leen returned thanks to the performers. During the evening reference was made to the strength of the Manchester Unity, and the fine type of men and women who had been, and still were, conducting the affairs of the Order, the high ideals for which they were striving, and the great work done by the pioneers, who in the early days of the Order had to overcome difficulties which to-day would seem insurmountable, arid Who laid the sure foundations on which the Order stood, today. Acknowledgment was made of the great debt owed to the women, who were thanked for their valuable assistance, especially in catering for the numbers at the function; Various speakecs urged the younger people to take a greater interest in the lodge, and thus help to promote the universal brotherhood of mankind. The following assisted at the banquet: Mesdames C. Dalgety, P. F. Dougherty, C. Leen, J. McCabe, J. McPhail, R. Oats and W. G. Wilson and Miss Dougherty. Church Parade There was a church parade of members of sister lodges at the Kakanui Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon. The Rev. H. O. Bowman (Maheno) conducted the service, and gave a welcome to the members of the various lodges represented, making •pecial reference to Mr George Southgate, of Kakanui, who had been a member of the lodge for 65 years, but who was, unfortunately, unable to be with them at the special service. A feature of the parade was the attendance of a large number of members of the Loyal Oamaru Juvenile Lodge. Mr Bowman gave a splendid address to the young people, and then delivered an inspiring address to the congregation. Appropriate hymns and music added, to an impressive service. After the service, the brethren marched back to the hall, and Per. Secretary W. S. Barnett, on behalf of the N.G., thanked the visiting brethren for attending in large numbers and making the parade such a success. It was decided to write to Mr Bowman, thanking him for his services, which were much appreciated. Grand Ball The lodge brought the celebrations to a close bri Monday night with a grand ball.in the' Athenaeum Hall, at which,there'was a very large attendance ■of members. Visiting ;■ brethren from'. Oamaru and Dunedin, and friends. The hall was tastefully decorated for the .occasion, and excellent music was supplied by Mitchell's orchestra, with extras by Mr L. Dougherty. Messrs Dougherty and C. Leen were M.C.'s. Mrs Masters (Dunedin) sang two songs, and supper was served by the ladies, those in charge being Mesdames Barnett, Dalgety, Dougherty. Innes, McCabe, McPhail, Leen.'Oats, A. J. Wilsoh. and W. G. Wilson, and Miss Dougherty. The visiting brethren expressed their appreciation of the splendid hospitality received over the week-end. The Lodge Committee was to be congratulated, it was said, on the way, the various functions were organised and the manner in which they were carried out .
