FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY
DECREASE IN IMPORTATION MORE MEN EMPLOYED STATEMENT BY MINISTER (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 25. “ The importation of footwear for the period that has gone this year is substantially less than in the corresponding periods in normal years in the past, and the number of men employed in the industry in the Dominion is considerably increased, even after allowing for the number of men who have had to be put off,” said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (MrD. G. Sullivan), when asked whether he had any comment to make on the complaints that have recently been made by manufacturers on the present state of the footwear industry in New Zealand Mr Sullivan added that all he could say was that the recent statement by the Prime Minister would be put into effect. The Government stood for the development of the secondary industries and, while conserving trade with Great Britain was committed to a policy of increasing production in the Dominion.
