THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." (Established November 15, 1881.] DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, OCT. 26, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

A meeting of theTokomairiro Earners Club was held in Capstick’s Hall, Tokomairiro, on Saturday afternoon. Mr John Drewe, R.M., President, occupied the chair. The “Independent says, “After some discussion, it was resolved to have a show early in December, for all descriptions of stock (except horned cattle), produce, and imelements; horned cattle being ex» eluded on account of the danger of the disease. . . With regard to' a reading-room, it was stated that Mr M‘Gill had offered a site for one if it could be built, and a proposal was made to erect one by share. Ultimately a committee was appointed to enquire and report as to the best means of establishing a reading-room. A highly important discovery (says the “Bruce Independent") was made on Monday last by some men employed in making a saw-pit on Mr Barnes’s land, in the Tokomainro Bush. The discovery was of what seems likely to prove a seam of excellent coal. The locality, is close to the north-east corner of Mr J. Dewe’s property, not very far form the wellknown petrifying well. The coal lies quite close to the surface, and as the distance from the township is somewhat less than two miles the value of the discovery will be considerable, if the seam proves a permanent one. The “Tuapeka Press” states—That between 400 and 500 Chinamen may be expected shortly to arrive and locate themselves in that district. A meeting is to be held at Lawrence (Tuapeka) with a view to form a Jockey Club for the district, and to make arrangements for local races. The first show of stock, under the auspices of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, has been held. The “Herald” says, “The entries in sheep comprise no less than 50 different exhibits, some of which arc said to equal those shown in any part of New Zealand, and to be much superior to those exhibited in Christchurch last year. In horses there are 24 entries, and in cattle 16.” A fire engine for the Hokitika Volunteer Brigade was landed from the Alma schooner on the 18th inst. The “Times” states that it is “the first fire engine that ever landed upon West Coast shores, and that to Mrs Mumford was deputed the honor of christening it “The Victoria.” The fine schooner built on the i’eclaimed ground, to the south of the jetties, was most successfully launched yesterday afternoon. . . . Her dimensions are—Length of keel, 79ft: length over all, 90ft; breadth of beam, 19ft; depth of hold, 7ft 6in. . . . We heard many professional opinions of the Queen of the Isles after the launch. All of them were in praise of the vessel; and she is, we think, a credit to her builder, her owners, and the port. The “ Wellington Independent" has a long article upon the demonstration in Dunedin on the return of the members. Our contemporary’s indignation overpowers him. The condition of the writer must have been intemperate in the extreme when he penned such a sentence as the following. If any one can understand it, he ought to apply for the situation of sub-editor to the some journal:—“ With a city for capital of the second class as to population the General Government, that to which the greater social and political questions are consigned, would never be liable to pressure of the kind, for it must ever bo the interest of the locality which derives great benefit from the presence of the Legislature and Executive to maintain their independence and protect their reputation.” Some effort is being made (says the Teviot correspondent of the “ Tuapeka Press ”) to raise a fund for the erection of a Church and School Building at the Teviot. Nearly L6O has been subscribed. . . .”
