The moderately fancied Cordon scored a decisive victory in the Farmers’ Steeplechase, for which Tehope and Daventry were the favourites. Cordon reached the front early and led throughout to win easily from Folly’s Choice. Gay Cavalier, after being second most of the way, finished third, but was disqualified for running inside the second fence, third place being awarded to Daventry. who was a long way back. The third fancy, Red Fox, gave a dashing display of jumping to win the Hunters’ Hurdles in good style from the each-way favourite Englishman. Holly Lu led” over the first fence and made play past the stands from English Night, Day Boy. Englishman and Red Fox. Going along the back. Day Boy joined Holly Lu in the lead, and Red Fox also improved his position. Red Fox jumped to the front at the fence near the half-mile, and was clear entering the straight from Englishman. Holly Lu, English Night and Sandy Mountain. Red Fox jumped the last fence in good style and went on to win by four lengths from Englishman, who defeated Holly Lu by three lengths. Sandy Mountain was a head away fourth, followed by Grantham and Day Boy. Red Fox is on the improve and registered his best performance to date. Englishman made a fine showing, but found the winner too good at the weights. Finishing well on the rails. Gay Sister brought off a surprise in defeating the each-way favourite Te Monowai in the Bardowie Handicap, paying over a score on the straight-out machine. Raceline whipped round at the start, and Gay Egypt, who lost his feet, unseated his rider. Te Monowai and Tepoto were smartest to begin from Desert Wings and Maereana. Te Monowai drew out slightly at the top and led into the straight from Tepoto, Maereana and Gay Sister, who was moving up on the raile. Te Monowai left the fence in the run home and Gay Sister came through on the inside to win by half a length. Maereana was a length and a-half away third, and Requiem was fourth, ahead of Tepoto. and Mungari. The Members’ Memorial Handicap was won convincingly by the well-sup-ported Rona Bay. The field left to a good start and Orac went on to make the running from Rona Bay and Philerhup, with Sinking Fund, Dutch Girl, and Mazir handy. Orac was three lengths clear along the back, with Rona Bay. Philemup, Sinking Fund and Mazir handy. Crossing the top Rona Bay and Mazir made sharp runs that took them to Orac, and Rona Bay was first into the straight from Mazir, Orac, Philemup,. and Dutch Girl. Nothing had a chance with Rona Bay at the finish and she won easily by two lengths and a-half from Mazir. Orac was a length away third, just defeating Dutch Girl after a hard race over the last furlong. Philemup. Sinking Fund and Gay Streak were next. Rona Bay is right back to her best form. The Waikato Hunt Cup was a chapter of accidents, and the race was robbed of considerable interest when the leaders, Adsum and Thespis, ran off at the completion of the first round. The mishaps commenced early when High Commissioner fell at the first fence. Thespis attended to the early pacemaking, and at the double was in command from Grantham, Sleepy, and Adsum. who were in close order and clear of the others. Adsum headed Thespis as they turned along the back, but they ran off at the fence near the six furlongs, leaving Windsor Lad to take the lead. Lochiel Lad was the next to come to grief, and he broke a leg when he fell heavily at the fence near the top turn. Windsor Lad, who was running down his fences, led past the stands, but was headed by St. Musk and Sleepy before leaving the straight. St. Musk showed the way along the back and led into the straight from Sleepy, Tangled, and Bells of Bow. Sleepy headed St. Musk at the last fence, and went on to beat him by three parts of a length. Tangled was eight lengths away third, and Bells of Bow was fourth. Then followed Windsor Lad, Grantham, and Mio Lume. Royal Dispute fell in the second round. It was with a good finishing effort that Bass won the Bruntwood Hack Handicap, for which May Song was favourite. Gay Egypt, Free Advice, and May Song were prominent early, Gay Egypt leading across the top from Senacre, Free Advice, and Queen Lu. Gay Egypt showed the way into the straight to Senacre, Free Advice, Grand Score, Hopalong, and Cheval de Volee, with Bass coming fast on the outside. Cheval de Volee was in front 50 yards from the post, hut Bass finished strongly to beat him by a head. Gay Egypt was a length away third, and Senacre was fourth. The Te Rapa trainer J. F. Tutchen supplied first and second with Awhiowhio and Sandrift in the Ladies Bracelet Handicap, Awhiowhio being a pronounced favourite. Cordon and Tahae Mea were quickly prominent, Tahae Mea going on to make the running from Gordon, Little Anglia. Awhiowhio and Etcetera. With five furlongs to go Sandrift moved up, and a little further on Awhiowhiq also made a forward move. Sandrift led into the straight from Awhiowhio, Tahae Mea and Little Anglia. Once in line for the post Awhiowhio soon headed Sandrift and he went on to win by four lengths from Sandrift. Red Fox, after being in the rear in the middle stages, stayed on to get third, a length and a-half away. Revelling in the soft going, the outsider, Mangukaha, won the Bollard Memorial Handicap, for which Prince Acre was the favourite. Sergia, Little Artist and Tonnerre were quickly prominent, Tonnerre leading along the back from Sergia, Little Artist, Prince Acre and Johnny Walls, with Mangukaha in the rear. Sergia and Mangukaha joined Tonnerre in the lead after going about three furlongs, and Mangukaha then gained a break to lead into the straight clear of Tonnerre, Prince Acre, Little Artist and Johnny Walls. Mangukaha stayed on to win by two lengths from Little Artist, who defeated Sergia by a length. • Prince Acre was fourth.
