If dipped in hot water before frying, sausages will not burst. To slice tomatoes finely for sandwiches, use the bread-saw. Vinegar bottles when stained brown with acid can be cleaned by filling with a strong solution of washing soda. Leave to stand for half an hour, then rinse in warm water. You can freshen up stale vegetables by soaking them for about an hour in cold water containing the juice of a lemon. Mattresses will keep in better condition if fitted with loose covers of calico, or other durable material, which can be taken off and laundered regularly.
