THE MONTAGUE SHOW

EXTREMELY BRIGHT REVUE FUN, SONG, AND DANCING Humour and brightness are the essential features of the Montague Show, which opened its Dunedin season on Saturday night and played to another packed house last evening and they have been blended with variety, speed, and competence so successfully that there is not a dull moment from the first curtain until the last. The Montague Show is an English company, with a sprinkling of American and Continental talent, and its non-stop frivolity is of the type that will always appeal in comparison with the mechanical output of Hollywood and Elstree. The company is headed by a small but unusually bright band of comedians. Mr George Doonan is the funster in chief and this quickfire comedian comes through a heavy role with outstanding success. He leads a sprightly gang and even Dunedin audiences, notoriously difficult to please, have been kept simmering by its eccentricities. Then there is dancing of a standard only very occasionally seen on the New Zealand stage. The Darmora troupe of Hungarian dancers is versatile and highly accomplished, its performance of the Can-Can being a noteworthy number The staging for their several numbers is lavish and as novel as the subjects of their presentations. They are worthy of the high reputation (hat had preceded them. The Blenders, an American quartet, are a well balanced combination: but undoubtedly one of the greatest successes of the companyds scored by the Dawn sisters, two young Americans bubbling over with mirth. Their burlesque of classical ballet dancing is a gem. The second half of the programme transports the show to the East, with the ballets, harem adventures, specialty dances and acrobatics. Alma Mackie provides a very pleasant interlude and George Doonan holds the stage with consistent success. The Montague Show is definitely something special It is vaudeville of the highest class, assisted by splendid mounting, brisk music and an atmosphere charged with fun.-
