ROUND MOUNT EGMONT E. NEWALL WINS EVENT (Per United Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Oct. 23. E. Newall, of Christchurch, won the Taranaki circular road race round Egmont over a course of about 100 miles. H. Bayley (New Plymouth) and G. Parker (New Plymouth) gained the fastest and second fastest times. Thirty riders contested the race, which was held in fine weather on excellent roads, H. G. Watson (Christchurch) broke his chain after eight miles and had to retire. J. Bicknell (Auckland) won the Junior Championship. The results are: — E. Newall. NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY J. BROWN NELSON RIDER’S SUCCESS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 24. Leading the field from the summit of Paekakariki Hill, M. Graham, a 17-year-old Nelson rider, who had 32 minutes’ start ,'-om the scratch men, but who conceded handicaps up to 58 minutes, won the annual 100 Miles Palmeiston North-Wellington Cycle Race on Saturday. The fastest rider was J. Brown, of Auckland, who thus became the 100 miles amateur North Island road champion for the season. Brown was one of the six men on scratch, and he finished fifteenth. His time was 4hr 38min 17 2-ssec. The Nelson riders did well, filling first and second places and winning the teams’ trophy. J. Burn, of Nelson, who’ was second this year, was second also last year. Brown, who was fastest, has been doing well in the Empire Games trials for other events. His time was only Imin 17 2-ssec longer than the record for the race set up by F. Grose in 1935.
