FIRE BRIGADE CALLS

MINOR OUTBREAKS Smoking in bed was given as the cause of a small outbreak of fire which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in an eight-roomed wooden house, No. 5 Arthur street, owned and occupied by Mrs J. R. Glendining. The bed and bedding were damaged, but the Fire Brigade, which was called at 1.47 a.m., prevented the blaze spreading. Both the house and its contents arc insured in the Standard Office.

A chimney fire was attended by the brigade at a house on the Main South road at 7,19 a.m. on Saturday and at 7.38 a.m. there was a small outbreak at No. 1 Forth street, where a spark from a stove had set fire to a case of glass. Another chimney fire at Pentland street. North-East Valley, engaged the attention of the brigade at 2.42 p.m. The brigade was called out on two occasions yesterday, the first being at 10.33 a.m. to a chimney fire in a house, 19 Morrison street, Caversham. At 11.18 there was a minor outbreak in a detached washhouse and workshop at 35 Clarendon street, the cause being sparks from a chimney. Only slight damage was done.
