THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” [Established November 15. 1861.] DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, OCT. 25, 1866.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

Invercargill is reviving. The “ Southland Times ” of Monday says, “We have noticed that during the last few weeks, unmistakable signs of a growing confidence in the future of the Province has been exhibited. Several new buildings have been erected, and others long closed up re-opened, with extensive and costly alterations.” The “Times,” in another paragraph, says, “We are glad to find the Philharmonic Society is not asleep, but, on the contrary, has made solid progress, and has decided to give the first concert in the middle of next month which will be just three months after the formation of the society—the time originally promised.”

A number of the members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade met last evening for the purpose of trying a new fire engine, the patent of Messrs Shand and Mason, which has recently been imported by Messrs Morison, Law, and Co. The following description of it has been furnished to us:—lt is mounted on springs and high wheels with wooden spokes; is of extremely light draught, and can be moved from place to place with great facility. There are two pumps of gun metal and copper, each 4 inches in diameter with a nine-inch stroke and metallic valves. It is well provided with hose, and can be fed from its own cistern, which will hold forty gallons of water. Six or eight men can work it, and although so small it will throw forty-four gallons per minute a distance of eighty feet.— The experiments made last evening were most satisfactory, and fully proved the usefulness of the invention.

We extract the following from the “Tuapeka Recorder”: —“The memorial referred to in a recent issue as haying emanated from applicants for agricultural leases on the Spylaw Run, above the Beaumont, has called forth the following reply from the Government: — ‘Understanding from the memorial that there are about 1000 acres applied for in the immediate proximity, and that the country is the best in that locality for agricultural Soses, I will cause an inquiry to be 5 without delay, and a report given in as to the suitability of the district for agriculture, and the fact of so many applications being made will have great weight In any decision that may be come to. If the report is satisfactory, as quickly as possible after receiving delegated powers under the new Goldfields Act, I will cause a proclamation to be issued cancelling the portion of the run r&ferred to. (Signed) Thomas Dick.’ ” The “ Lyttelton Times ” of Monday states that “ in addition to the companies recently raised in the northern districts, we hear that there is a possibility of a Native contingent composed of Maoris residing in the Kaiapoi pa being organised. , .
