A POPULAR HOLIDAY
FIXTURES FOR LABOUR DAY With a workless Saturday followed by Sunday and the Labour Day holiday, hundreds of holiday-makers took full advantage of the long week-end and left town by car or train on Friday night and Saturday for the various seaside resorts. Those who remain at home, however, will be amply catered for to-day in the way of amusement, both in the city and further afield, and if the weather proves favourable, the various sporting and other fixtures which are to be held should be well patronised. Racing enthusiasts will have their choice of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting or the second day of the Gore Racing Club’s fixture, and for those who are interested in athletics the time-honoured Labour Day sports meeting at Mosgiel should prove a popular attraction. The annual returned soldiers’ golf tournament is to be held at Balmacewen and has, as in former years, drawn a large entry. An unusually interesting feature of the day’s activities will be a field day at Tahuna Park in which seven Salvation Army bands will participate, and in connection with the jubilee celebrations of the Merton Presbyterian Church, a picnic is to be held at Merton. As the volume of motor traffic on the roads will no doubt be exceptionally heavy, the traffic authorities invite motorists to co-operate With the inspectors by exercising every caution while driving, and by paying due regard to the traffic regulations.
