THREATENED WAR
NICARAGUA AND HONDURAS EFFORTS TO SETTLE DISPUTE WASHINGTON, Oct. 22. The United States has joined Venezuela and Costa Rica in an effort to settle the threatened war between Nicaragua and Honduras owing to the postage stamp dispute. The movement of troops towards the disputed territory prompted the action. A message received on September 6 stated: Relations between Nicaragua and Honduras are gravely imperilled owing to a dispute over the recent Nicaraguan postage stamp, which bears an engraved map of Nicaragua, allegedly including a section of the territory of Honduras. Honduras protested, and Nicaragua coldly retorted: “It portrays the official map of Nicaragua.” Honduran wrath is approaching detonation point, and Nicaraguan residents have threatened a large number of Hondurans with repatriation. Meetings are being held throughout Honduras, demanding war. A students’ manifesto proclaims: “ The decisive moment in our history has arrived. We can break faith with future generations or fight against the dismemberment of our Fatherland.”
