NOTES ON THE MEETING (From Our Special Reporter) WELLINGTON. Oct. 23. The Wellington spring meeting was continued in fine weather, and the card attracted a large attendance. Royal Chief asserted his superiority over Smoke Screen in the Trentham Stakes. Amigo was easily the best of the two-year-olds in the Karitane Handicap, in which Ortyx showed something like her early form by leading until well into the straight. They were on the right track in connection with Cerne Abbas in connection with the Watkins Handicap, in which Rebel Lad would have proved more dangerous if ridden to force the pace. Sunee was the best stayer of the rest of the field. Ben Braggie’s win was too brilliant for the opposition in the Awatea Handicap. They preferred Journet to Donegal in the Rimu Hurdles, but at the business end the latter won well, and the former ran a bad race in comparison with his first day’s form. There was a hot pace on all the way and the winner scored in particularly fast time. A fancied horse in Redolent found the opposition much too good for him. White Gold was regarded as a certainty for the Trial Stakes and was backed to a short price in a big field. She was always well enough placed and handy to the leaders. Coming round the top Royal Choice, Relative and Sigurd were the early leaders, with Rockingham handy. They ran this way to the straight, where Relative and Rockingham took charge and the former won by a neck. Sigurd was over a length away and White v*old close up. Then came Screamer, Royal Choice, Lady Montana. Fairy Dale and Hinerawe. There was widespread opinion about Royal Chief and Smoke Screen in connection with the Trentham Stakes. Smoke Screen made the running and was joined at the home turn by Royal Chief. Smoke Screen was beaten two furlongs from home, but battled on without any chance of beating the favourite. Siegmund and Night Lass made the pace in the Heretaunga Handicap and led into the straight. Royal Minstrel then put in a claim, and, racing to the front, won by over a length from Quadroon, who beat Siegmund by a neck. Good Sun came from last to finish fourth, with Lady Siegfried next. Lazybones never looked dangerous. Miracle was moving up when coming round the top, but was in deep trouble after entering the straight. Ortyx was first to show from Amigo, Godfrey and Screen Lord. Ortyx was still in charge until well inside the false rail. Amigo then ran to the front and won by five lengths from Peerless, who drew up to beat Ortyx by half a length. Rakahanga, Minga and Rarotonga were next. Queen of Song was struck out of the Watkins Handicap. Cerne Abbas was the popular pick. She was first out, but Night Dress and Tiger Gain led her and Rebel Lad along the back. Night Dress led into the straight, but Tiger Gain had him beaten and then Cerne Abbas and Rebel Lad put in a claim. Cerne Abbas stalled off Rebel Lad and beat him by half a length. Sunee finishe-d on well . length away third, with Tiger Gain a head away fourth. Pukeko and Boomerang were next. The Awatea Handicap was a good betting race. Ben Braggie won well from Grey Honour and Joviality Paper Slipper and Dictate began well but soon drifted back. The rest of the field had no chance with the winner. The Bigot and Lucullus Lad singled themselves out at the finish of the Belmont Handicap, and the judge could not separate them in a stirring finish. They were well clear of Corroboree and Cardsharper at the finish. Top Row was never prominent. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Oct 24 Following are the Wellington acceptances for the third day;—

Queen of Song i 3 coming down in the weights, and, with the sting out of the going, would be dangerous in the Pearce Handicap. Top Row was unlucky to run against a good horse in Suleiman on the first day at Trentham, and will be in favour for the Tararua Handicap. The Harcourt Stakes should provide an interesting race, and of the nine engaged they may favour Royal Chief. Kinnoull, and Cuddle.

Patagonia was finishing on well at the end of the Glen Hurdles, and will be in demand for the Rona Hurdles. Boughal will also be in favour. The distance attached to the Awatea Handicap was too short for Dictate, who will be better suited by the mile journey of the Pearce Handicap. Both Wild Chase and Paper Slipper were big in condition when racing at Trentham, and should be in better shape by the time the New Zealand Cup meeting comes round. Suleiman, Relative, and Rockingham will probably be the popular picks for the Novice Handicap. White Gold is an attractive filly, and may show improved form. Whirling would have won the Shtorts Handicap in another couple of strides, and in consequence will start favourite for the Nainai Handicap. Maori Song may be next best. Silver Streak has been racing beyond sprint distances, and this fact may not help his chance in the Nainai Handicap. Silver Streak had his first real test as a stayer at Trentham, and failed.

Royal Minstrel and Siegmund will dominate the betting on the Ruahine Handicap, and Galteemore may be selected as the best of the lightweights. There is not a race suitable for a handicap stayer on the third card for the Wellington spring meeting, and probably for that reason those that raced earlier at the meeting are not racing on the final day. Oratory was making up ground towards the finish of the Awatea Handicap, and the fact may bring her into favour for the Pearce Handicap. Last season Oratory displayed good form over six furlongs, a mile, and a mile and a-quarter. Ben Braggie’s form at Wellington will bring him into favour for the Stewards Handicap. Last year he finished fourth with 7.7 \ to Paper Slipper 8.5, Knockfin, and Triune 8.3, who reads well in on paper. Ben Braggie is now a more seasoned horse and Paper Slipper could not get near him when giving 41b in the Awatea Handicap. Whirling and Black Thread also showed impressive form at Trentham, but Ben Braggie may prove the best of the North Island lot in the Stewards’ Handicap. THE GORE MEETING TREBLEACK PRINCIPAL WINNER ALMA SUCCESSFUL IN SPRINT CHARLTON HANDICAP TO NATTY (Per United Press Association) GORE, Oct. 23. NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 23. The Gore meeting was opened today in ideal weather, but the track was hard. There was a large attendance, and both totalisator and gate returns showed an increase. There was good racing throughout. Pink Robe led nearly all the way to win the High-weight Handicap. Pink Robe led Burwood, Ardchoille, and The Surgeon into the straight, and in a close finish Pink Robe beat The Surgeon by a-quarter of a length. Burwood was a length away, a head in front of Last Link. Then came Ardchoille, who failed to carry his weight. Lord Nuffield came strongly at the right end to win the Gordon Hack Handicap. Lumiere and Gipsy Fair began best from Irish Birdcatcher and Lord Nuffield. At the turn Lumiere was just behind Gipsy Fair. Then came Lord Nuffield, Janet Gaynor, Night Wings, and Irish Birdcatcher together, and Lumiere took charge racing to the. straight, where Sailing Lady and Ballad improved their positions. Once in line Lord Nuffield shot out and went on to beat Lumiere by two lengths. Gipsy Fair was three-quarters of a length away, and then Sailing Lady Soliad, and Peacock. Trebleack led nearly all the way to win the Waikaka Handicap, and it was an impressive effort. He and Daring Deed made the early running from Amelita, Tauramai, and Milford. Five furlongs from home Amelita joined Trebleack in the lead, then coming Daring Deed, Grand Finale, and Milford. The order was the same into the straight. Trebleack did not have to do his best to beat Amelita by half a length. Tauramai was a similar distance away, and then came Milford, McHeath, and Daring Deed. Tauramai and Milford are likely early improvers. Waitemata made the field in the Belfour Trot look cheap. He took the lead early, and was never headed, winning by eight lengths pulling up. He was followed through the race by Sun Gauge and Seascape. The last-named ran on for second place, but Sun Gauge dropped out. It was a poor contest Another all-the-way win was registered in the Novice Handicap, when Boswell won. The early leaders were Boswell, Gusto, Gusterina, and Vanity Queen. Philein moved into third place on the far turn. Into the straight Boswell led Gusto, Waitoru, Philein, and Vanity Queen. The last-named put in a great run, but just failed to reach Boswell, who is by Balboa from Celerity 11. Philein was a good third, and then came Gusterina and Turaki. Alma won the Flying Handicap well, and it was a fine effort. Alma began smartest from Dissemble, but after a furlong Dissemble went on from Alma and All Humbug. Silver Lark then made a fast run and joined Dissemble in the lead. Across the top Dissemble and Silver Lark led Stolen March and Alma. The last-named was in a pocket on the rails, but got clear at the distance, and went on to beat Dissemble by three-quarters of a length. Stolen March was half a head away, and then Silver Lark and Grand Finale. Stolen March was unlucky, as his saddle slipped in the straight. Prince Charles won the Otama Trot without being extended over the final furlong. Golden Miller and Grand Meteor made the running from Gold Valley and Direct Thorpe until three furlongs from home, where Prince Charles ran into third place. Once in line Prince Charles cut down the leaders and went on to beat Golden Miller by six lengths. Grand Meteor was a neck away, then Happy King and Moko Child.

Natty led all the way to win the Charlton Handicap. At the six furlongs Natty led Baltruin, Hanlon, and Gambler’s Luck, and they raced in this order to the straight. Natty held her lead to beat Hanlon by a length Thermidor was half a length away, and Coxcomb right up, then Wonderful. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY iPeb United Press Association >
