PORT CHALMERS NEWS
QUEEN’S DRIVE BOATING CLUB There was a large attendance of members and visitors at the official opening of the season of the Queen’s Drive Boating Club on Saturday afternoon. Mr N. Dodds (president), who declared the season open, extended a welcome to the visitors. He paid a tribute to the committee members for their work on the plant during the winter months, and wished members a successful season. The president performed the ceremony of dedicating the club’s new sculler to the memory of Mr T. R. Wright, who, he said, had given great service to the club during his life time. A kindly man, he was highly esteemed by all and would be greatly missed from the boatshed. As a champion oarsman, and, later as a member and a coach, he had done much for the club, and it was only fitting that his memory should be perpetuated by the affixing of a plate of dedication to the club’s new sculler. Mr W. J. Wilson, who represented the Otago Rowing Association, apologised for the absence of Messrs S. G. Styche and T. F, Mackie, president and vice-president of the association respectively. Mr Wilson paid a tribute to Mr Wright as an oarsman and a sportsman, and gave reminiscences of rowing in Otago. Mr Wilson wished the club a successful season. Messrs G. Thorn (Port Chalmers), P Vallis (Otago), E. V. Fairbairn (Oamaru), J. Hurrell (North End), W. Robinson (University), and H. Camp (Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat Club), on behalf of their clubs, extended best wishes for a successful season. Mr A. M. Miller, of Port Chalmers, also spoke. Club medals won last year were presented as follows: —Cameron Fours —L. Olsen, R. Paris, A. Craig, R. Mathieson; aggregate medal for highest points scored in regattas, U. Sutherland. Members and visitors were entertained by the club.
