CHORAL SOCIETY

CONCERT NEXT WEDNESDAY

An outstanding piece of music, Vaughan Williams's "Sea Symphony," will head the programme of the Choral Society's .special concert, conducted by Mr Alfred Walmsley in the Town Hall on Wednesday next. As the Plunket Society's Building Fund is to benefit from the proceeds, the occasion is of unusual importance; and patrons who by their attendance support a worthy cause will be rewarded by an absorbing musical evening. A full rehearsal of the "Sea Symphony," held in the Town Hall this week, demonstrated that both

singers and players have this entrancing music well under control. The soloists are Miss Betty Pocock, soprano, and Mr John Pringle, baritone. The Training College Ladies' Choir, under Mr George Wilkinson, will contribute an off-stage chorus, which makes an electrifying and ingenious effect, coming in the last movement of the " Sea Symphony." Another work of special interest on this programme is "Hell Gate," A. E. Housman's poem, which was set to music by Temple Bevan, the work being composed at Auckland in 1934. The Dunedin Choral Society will give the first public performance. The orchestra has been specially strengthened for this concert. The remainder of the programme includes many interesting works, Beethoven's Choral Fantasia, for instance, in which Miss Mavis Macdonald will take the buoyant solo piano part, and Brahms's " Song of Destiny," one of the loveliest of that composer's works. The thrilling and spectacular " Coronation Scene" from Moussorgsky's opera "Boris Godounov," will head a popular group of Russian numbers, and two Bach chorales are also included. The booking arrangements are advertised.
