WAIMATE
Action Against Farm Fests The Porina caterpillar, responsible for so much damage to pastures in the district during the winter, is now in the moth stage and a wel -known farmer makes the suggestion that the lighting of fires each evening for a time should assist in reducing 4he probable damage next year. At Morven the other evening, a straw fire lit at dusk, was responsible for attracting and destroying thousands of motns. There are many hundreds of thousands of the moths in the Waimate district at present, and farmers are concerned for the prospects next season when allowance is made for the natural increase of the pest. It is suggested, however, that the regular practice of lighting fires at dusk, when the moth s on the wing, shoud result in a lessened crop of caterpillars next year.
