ALEXANDRA Defence Rifle Club Last Saturday the Alexandra Defence Rifle Club held its official opening for the 1937-38 season. Visitors were present from the Cfomwell, Bannockburn, and Upper Clutha Rifle Clubs. The president (Mr S. C. Wells; welcomed those present, and hoped that an enjoyable season would ensue. He called on Mr W. Bringans to declare the range open. Mr Bringans briefly reviewed the shooting history of the district. The Volunteers had attained a high standard in open competition, and the Goldfields Shield was to be competed for once again on the same lines as previously—a teams' match between the various clubs. He hoped the competition would foster a spirit of friendly rivalry between the clubs. The members of the club were to be congratulated on the amount of hard work they had put into the range. During the afternoon seven shots and one optional sighter were fired at -the 500 and 600 yards ranges. R. G. Simpson eing the first member to secure a possible. Sherwin, 32—20—6 58; J Jocelyn. 20—25—12—57. Fraser Dam Work on the Fraser dam is now completed. The dam has been filled, and so far has shown no signs of leaking. The water will thus be available for this irrigation season, and should prove a great boon to settlers on Earnscleugh Flat. The men who have been working on the dam have been transported to the Haast Pass road and to Lauder, where works are in propress. Personal Mr N. M. Dineen, who has been In business as a hairdresser in Alexandra for a number of years, has purchased a similar business in George street, Dunedin, and left for his new business yesterday. Messrs T. M. Ball, inspecting engineer, P. Keller, district engineer, and J. D. Watt, resident engineer of the Public Works Department, are at present carrying out an inspection of the various works in Central Otago. Mr P. S. Rothwell. of the Public Works Department, is at present on annual leave. Memorial Service On Sunday evening, in St. Enoch's Presbyterian Church, a large congregation assembled to pay respect to the memory of Mr Archibald Ashworth, who had for close on 40 years been associated with the activities of the church. Mr D. B. Fawcett eulogised the life and work of the deceased. Mr Ashworth, since a very early age, had imbued himself with the thought of service. He had not spared himself in his efforts to serve the town and district, and to this service could no doubt be attributed his early demise. Mr Fawcett said no greater monument could be erected to Mr Ashworth's memory than that all should give themselves over to the service of God and their fellow-men. The choir rendered the anthem "Now the Labourer's Task is O'er," and Miss Ramsay sang the solo "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Bowling; Activity on the Alexandra bowling green is well under way, and already competition has started in the interclub fixtures. On Tuesday the first challenge for the rink ferns was played, when the holders—A. Fraser, W. J. Russell, A. I. Milne, and T. E. Sunderland—retained the ferns from J. R. McKissock. A. G. Begg, J. Gardner, and J. H. Timmings, jun„ by 18 points to 15. Personal * Mr J. Scott, traffic inspector for Central OtagO, has resigned his position to go into business on his own account. QUEENSTOWN The Weather An exceptionally fine spell of spring weather has been experienced. The ground, however, is becoming very dry and rain is badly wanted to accelerate growth. Queenstown Gardens There is a wealth of spring flowers in the Domain at the present time. Narcissi predominate, while polyanthus and tulips are helping to make up a fine display. The flowering trees are in full bloom, and lend much attraction to the beautiful resort. During the winter the whole of the pergolas were renewed with new timber. The bowling greens are now ready for play, and no doubt many Labour Day visitors will be looking forward to a " roll up." Golf The ladies' section of the Wakatipu Golf Club has completed its championship. In the semi-finals Mrs Wilkinson defeated Mrs Landrebe 7 up; Mrs Royds defeated Miss Henderson 4 up. In the final, Mrs Wilkinson beat Mrs Royds 7 up. A large number of members of the club went to Pembroke on Sunday and played a match with the Wanaka Club. The visitors were defeated in most of their games. They received hospitable treatment at th* hands of the home club. Military The reorganisation of the Southland Regiment has now been completed under the new defence scheme. It will supply C Company to the unit, with Major D. F. Leckie in command and Lieutenant P W. J. Cockerill (Queenstown) will be second in command. The four platoons comprised in this company are No. 9 (Milton), commanded by Lieutenant J. B. Gray; No. 10 (Roxburgh), commanded by Lieutenant A R. Alexander; No. 11 (Queenstown). commanded bv Second-lieutenant G T. Jardine; and No. 12 (Arrowtown), commanded by Secondlieutenant R. E, Romans. According to the reorganisation, the country units are given some prominence, and, no doubt, more enthusiasm should prevail. Nos. 10, 11, and 12 platoons will bivouac at Mr Jardine's woolshed, Kawarau, at the Labour Day week-end. The local platoon will assemble at the Garrison Hall on Saturday morning, October 23. and will be conveyed to the bivouac, In the evening the military unit in bivouac will march through the streets of Queenstown headed by the Queenstown Municipal Brass Band. They will also be joined by the Regimental Cadet detachment and No. 3 motor cycle platoon. Invercargill The parade will bring back memories of the local Volunteer movement over 30 years ago. Lawn Tennis Several members of the Queenstown Lawn Tennis Club went to Cromwell on Saturday, and played a match with the Cromwell Club Conditions were ideal for the games The home side easily accounted for the visitors, their tally being 14 sets (121 games) to 9 sets <B4 games). The Queenstown Club will hold its official opening on Wednesday At the week-end matches will be played with Cromwell and .Invercargill teams

Touring the World Messrs J. H. Vernon and H. H. Ford, of Whangarei, who are oh a hiking lour of the world, arrived here on Sunday from Wanaka, and spent two days in Queenstown. They will leave for Melbourne from Bluff on October 28. After traversing the Commonwealth and Tasmania they will leave for South Africa, the British Isles, Canada, America, and Europe. Messrs Vernor and Ford will lecture on New Zealand in their tour abroad, ahd they propose to write a book on their travels. MIDDLEMARCH Agricultural and Pastoral Society The annual meeting of the Strath- • Taieri A. and P. Society was held on Saturday evening, when 26 members ! were present. On the motion of the president, Mr J. Aubrey, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr James Robertson, a past president and a life member, was carried in the usual maimer. Speaking to the motion, Mr W. D. Mason made reference to Mr Robertson, who, he said, had been a loyal member and always ready to give a full Share of help when required. The chairman's report and the balance sheet were adopted. Before vacating the chair, the president thanked members for their loyal support during his term of office, and a vote of thanks was accorded him. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year:—President, Mr James Howell; vice-president. Mr E. Matheson; treasurer. Mr G. There was a large attendance, and the prize winners for the evening were:—Monte Carlo waltz, Mr W. Mason and Mrs F. Keast; lucky spot waltz, Mr and Mrs M. AMatheson; cards, Mrs M. Kean and Mrs B. Jennison and Mr F. Schluter and I Mr C. F. Polaschek. The president (Mr J. East) gave an account of the work of the club during the season, and presented the following cups and trophies:—The Strathavon Cup and miniature, presented by F. G. Glover and Son, for the highest handicap score (to be won three times), E. Peat; cup presented by Mr W. Ware for highest increase over the season, D. Valentine 83; W. Whiston Cup, for the first member of the club to attain the possible of 80, J. Keast; Mr James Thomson's trophy for the best average over 14 shoots, J. Guy; president's button for the best handicap shoot for men under 20, Mr L. Robertson EASTERN SOUTHLAND Obituary Advice has been received of the death at Auckland, on Tuesday morning, of Mr Donald H. Henderson; one of the early residents of Gore. Mr Henderson was born at Balclutha in 1874. and at four years of age he moved to Gore with his parents. His father, the late Mr William Henderson, was one of the first solicitors to practise at Gore. He received his education at the Gore Public School and won an Education Board scholarship, which entitled him to free education at the Southland Boys' High School. After leaving school he joined the staff of Messrs William Gardiner and Co., Mataura, and later received an appointment on the clerical staff of J. E. Watson and Co., Ltd., at Invercargill. While at Invercargill, Mr Henderson joined the second contingent of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to South Africa, and remained on service during the Boer War. On his return to the Dominion he rejoined the staff of J. E. Watson and Co., Ltd., and later accepted a position on the clerical staff of the Wairoa Freezing Works. He remained there for some time and then joined the building firm of Julian and Co., in which position he remained until his death. Mr Henderson married Miss Agnes Clark, of Mataura, 28 years ago, and is survived by his widow, one son—Mr R. Henderson (Auckland)—and two daughters. He is also survived by one brother—Mr A. Henderson (Gore)—and two sisters— Mesdames Whitmore (Auckland) and H. A. Martin (Christchurch).

Pioneer Football Club The annual smoke social of the Pioneer Football Club was held in the Gore Soldiers' Club social hall. Mr W. Forbes presided, and there was a large attendance of district footballers. The chairman extended a welcome to the visitors, and congratulated the senior players of the Pioneer Club on winning the Eastern Southland Championship.

Maori Raid Centenary A meeting of the Tuturau Maori Raid Centenary Committee was held at Mataura on Thursday evening. Mr J. Buchanan presided. Advice was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) and the Minister of Lands (Mr F. Langstone) that they would make every effort to attend the functions on December 4 to commemorate the centenary of the last fight between the North and South Island Maoris, which took place at Tuturau. The following programme of afternoon functions was drawn up and approved:—Address of welcome by the Mayor of Mataura (Mr J. Buchanan); handing over of the reserve by the Minister of Native Affairs, or his representative, to the trustees (the Mataura Borough Council); the unveiling of the monument and speeches by members of Parliament; dedication of the Maori pa by representatives of the Maori race. Mr J. L. Richardson was appointed to draw up a tentative programme for the evening functions. RANFURLY Lawn Tennis The annual meeting of the Maniototo Lawn Tennis Sub-association was held at Oturehua' on October 14. Delegates representing the following clubs were present:—Messrs G. and I. The Ranfurly Lawn Tennis Club opened its season on Saturday in perfect weather by holding a Mixed Doubles tournament, Visiting players were present from all the surrounding clubs. The tournament was won by Miss Forrester and Mr Fraser, with Mrs I. Mathias and Mr M. Murphy as runners-up. Golf A team of women and men from the Middlemarch Golf Club played the local club during the week-end in the annual game for the McKillop Cup. The visiting team was successful in winning by 10J games to 6J. Mr K. Burns, accepting the cup on behalf of the winners, referred to the good feling which existed between the two clubs, adding that his club looked forward to the return game to be played at Middlemarch.

Carnival In perfect weather on Saturday last the Ranfurly Bowling Club made a successful effort to raise money by holding a carnival. The carnival opened with a procession through the town of decorated cars, lorries, cycles, and walkers in fancy dress, lead by Mr L. White, playing the bagpipes. The procession ended at the Sports ground, where several competitions were held. A schoolboys' football match between Southern and Ranfurly also took place, the former team winning by 20 points to three. A fancy dress hockey match added to the gaiety of the afternoon. In conjunction with the carnival, the Bowling Committee held a bazaar in the hall, which was continued in the evening. The gross takings for the day amounted to nearly £l2O. TAPANUI Dairy Factory At the annual meeting of the Tapanui Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., Mr D. Keir (chairman of directors) presided over a good attendance of shareholders'. The chairman said that he considered that the guaranteed price fixed for the coming season was insufficient to cover the increased costs of production to be met by the producer. He also referred to the compensated price campaign, but said that it was not within the jurisdiction of the company to take any action at present. Mr Keir said he considered that the company had had quite a successful year. In regard to the surplus shown in the balance sheet, he said that 2d was paid to suppliers in August last, and he recommended that the balance, equivalent to id per lb of butter-fat should be held in reserve for the coming season. He formally moved the adoption of the balance sheet. The motion was seconded by Mr J. S. Edgar and carried. Messrs D. Keir and J. S. Edgar, the retiring directors, were re-electefl, also Mr R. S. Green, auditor, and Mr W. B. Naylor, solicitor. At a subsequent meeting of directors Mr D. Keir was re-elected chairman. Miniature Rifle Club ' The local Miniature Rifle Club concluded its first season's activities on Monday evening, when the final shoot for the club's Cup and Handicap Shield was fired. There was a splendid attendance of members. E. C. Sim proved the winner of the cup with a total score of 228, D. McColl, W Graham, and D. McNeil being equal for second place with 226. The handicap trophy was won by D. McNeil with a score of 237 points, S. Grace and A. J. Winslade closely following with scores of 236 each. E. C. Sim won the rifle button, and V. Jones the handicap button for the evening's shoot. Mr J. A. McDonald's trophy for tht*best women's score off the rifle was won by Miss M. McDonald, and Mrs E. C. Sim won the Graham trophy (handicap).
