LEPERS IN RUMANIA NURSES TERROR STRICKEN GENDARMES PREVENT DISASTER (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) BUCHAREST. Oct. 17. i .(Received Oct. 18, at 5.5 p.m.) Brandishing knives and sharp instruments stolen from the surgical ward, 70 lepers attempted a mass escape from an infectious diseases hospital at Tichilestu, a desolate spot in mosquito-infested marshes in the Danube delta. Terror stricken nurses and doctors were driven off by the lepers, who attempted to set fire to the hospital. The arrival of detachments of gendarmes on lorries prevented a disaster. They surrounded the Ifeprosarium and after several volleys had been fired over their heads the lepers threw down their weapons and fell to their knees, begging forgiveness. Several were slightly wounded. The ringleader escaped.
