STUDENTS’ ORCHESTRAL CLUB

CONCERT FOR MAORI MISSIONS An attractive entertainment, conducted under the auspices of the Presbyterian Young Women’s Bible Class Union, and organised for the purpose of assisting in the liquidation of the debt of the Maori Missions, was presented by the. Students’ Orchestral Club in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last night. At an interval in the performance, the Rev. H. A. Mitchell expressed the organisers’ appreciation of Mr J. A. Wallace’s action in volunteering, with his orchestra, to give the concert on behalf of the mission funds, and also of the public’s support of the effort. The concert, which'was substantially a repetition of the recital given by the club some two or three months ago, was warmly received by the audience, the enthusiastic work of the performers receiving due recognition. The orchestral items consisted of Crosby’s >“ United States Navy March." Auber’s “ Masaniello ” overture, the “ Gondoliers ” section, Minuetto and Finale, from Mozart’s Symphony in E flat, the major work of the evening, which was handled with confidence and skill, Haydn Wood’s Egyptian suite. “The Court of Pharaoh,” the waltz “Ciribiribin." and “The Great Little Army.” by Alford. Miss Rena Roche sang “ Look Up to the Sunrise ” and " Under the Deodar." with attractive artistry, her rich mezzo voice being admirably produced, and Miss Joyce Sampson provided a pleasing interlude with two songs sung in Maori, “ E Pari Ra ” and “ Home Little Maori, Home.” Miss Dorothy Stewart gave a skilful presentation of the violin solo “ Bolero,” by German, and Mr John Pringle sang with good expression and insight in his rendering of “Casend Hill,” “The Ledbury Train," and “The Floral Dance." Mr Oswald Pringle, in addition to providing the pianoforte accompaniments to the solo items, played a bracket of Greig compositions consisting of “ Norwegian March.” “ Nocturne,” ano “ March of the Dwarfs,” with good musicianly control and fluency of expression.
