PRESS-BUTTON CITY
Mason City, nestling high among sage bush on. the plateau above the swiftly-flowing Columbia River, is the world's first all-electric city. It has no chimneys belching forth black smoke. At present there are about 400 homes, though the city is expanding rapidly as more men- are engaged for work on the Grand Coulee dam —a project even bigger than Boulder dam—in the canyon below. Electricity is very cheap and is used for heating, lighting, cooking and all household work, and at night the city is a blaze of light that can be seen miles away. In addition to the usual gadgets, every home has an electric refrigerator, portable stove, and air-con-ditioning plant, and all machinery on the dam will be worked by electricity. The heating equipment is designed to keep the houses comfortable when the temperature outside is 29deg below zero!
