FIRE IN MINE
SHAFT A BLAZING INFERNO FORTUNATE DISCOVERY CAPETOWN, June 22. Shaft No. 12 in the Crown Mines, which is heavily timbered, has been a blazing inferno for the past 13 hours. The fire was discovered by a night shift of 80 men who were traversing the tunnels. When they encountered smoke they retreated and reached the surface safely before a huge volume of poisonous gas swept up. Fortunately the outbreak started between shifts.
