END OF NOTED BARQUE

Survivor of a tragic race from Lyttelton to London more than 50 years ago, the well-known barque Kylemore has been sold for breaking up at Hamburg by Captain Gustaf Erikson, owner of the largest sailing fleet in the world. The Kylemore was a competitor in an historic race with the barques Marlborough. Dunedin and Auckland. She beat the Auckland to the Thames by a tide, but the Marlborough and Dunedin were never heard of again. The Kylemore was built by Reids of Port Glasgow, in 1882. for Nicholson and M'Gill, of Liverpool. In 1906 she was sold to the Norwegians for £2515. Ten years later, when ship-owners were paying enormous prices for tonnage because of the war boom, a Danish firm bought her for a little more than £20.000.

When the shipping slump came after the war she was laid up for several years, but in 1925 she was bought by Mr R. K. Eager, who renamed her the Suzanne. In 1933 her owner died and she was offered for sale for breaking up. Captain Erikson, the Finnish sailing ship owner, decided to add her to his fleet, (he largest in the world. She was given her original name, and as the Kylemore she was engaged in the Baltic timber trade until she was withdrawn recently.
