FALSE PRETENCES
BOGUS AIRMAN "CRASHES" TERM OF IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 22. By pretending that he was a commercial air pilot, Ernest William Sampson, aged 32, obtained sums of money totalling £6 Bs, and on his "flight of fancy" he crashed when he met Detective Jones in Queen street on June 15. In the Police Court to-day he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £3 lis from Elizabeth Macquire, and also to charges of obtaining money from Arthur Clarence Denton and John Henry Pratt by falsely representing that he was employed by Union Airways at £lO 10s per week. "Sampson has previously been In trouble, and has a dozen convictions for similar offences." said Detective Sergeant M'Hugh. The magistrate (Mr W. R. M'Kean) reminded Sampson that he had already served three years' reformative detention for false pretences, and sentenced him to three months' imprisonment on each of the three charges, the sentences on two of the charges to be cumulative.
