LEITH CANAL
RAILWAY BRIDGE LENGTHENING APPROVAL BY CABINET Cabinet has approved of an arrangement with the Otago Harbour Board by which the board and the Railways Department will share the cost of lengthening the railway bridge over the Leith canal. This advice was received by the Daily Times yesterday from the Minister of Railways (Mr D. G. Sullivan). When the Minister visited Dunedin in March, representations were made to him by the Harbour Board with respect to the lengthening of the bridge, this being necessitated by the widening of the Leith, which is at present being carried out. Had the department not agreed to this course, the advantages of the widening would have been lost to a certain extent. An arrangement has now been come to, however, and it is certain that full benefit will be obtained from the widening of the canal and that the risk of flooding will be appreciably lessened. It is expected that this matter will be discussed at the meeting of the Harbour Board on Thursday night.
