ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE TRAMWAYS CLUB REINSTATED The Tramways Club, which tendered its resignation at the last meeting of the Management Committee of the Football Association, was reinstated last night as a result of a deputation which waited on the executive. Mr E. J. Anderson was in the chair, the deputation being received in committee. Regret was expressed by the deputation that a letter had been sent in at the last executive meeting stating that the club wished to withdraw from the competition. The letter, it was stated, had been written without the consent of the committee. In the circumstances, the executive accepted the explanation of the deputation, rescinded its previous decision, and the club was readmitted to the competition. SEAGULLS ON THE OVAL The town clerk (Mr R. A. Johnston) wrote replying to the association’s letter regarding the seagull problem on the Oval. The letter stated that it was an offence against the law to shoot the seagulls, and it was also an offence against the city by-laws to discharge a gun on the Oval. It was suggested that the association should, when necessary, use a portion of the North Ground for junior matches. No objections would be launched so long as the Oval was considered unfit for play. Mr J. M'Narey said that there were only two grounds on the Oval now which were used for Association fixtures. Goal posts for _ “ Soccer ” matches, however, had since been placed on the North Ground. Mr M. G. Mlnnes stated that the North Ground had been in good order last Saturday, and he considered the playing area set aside to be quite good for juniors. After further discussion, a recommendation that the Grounds Committee insoect all the grounds and submit a report at the next meeting was carried. QUESTION OF COACHING Remarking on the poor standard of plav among the clubs in Dunedin, Mr D. ‘Hanlin opened up the subject of the need for coaches, a general discussion resulting. There were teams all over the Continent, it was stated, which had experienced the beneficial result of English coaching, and to-day many of those teams were as strong as an English eleven. The same could apply to New Zealand provided satisfactory arrangements could be made to procure the services of a suitable coach. If a man could bo secured who was able to coach both cricket and “ Soccer ” it would bo a great help to both sports. It was stressed by several members that the coaching should take place amongst the schools, not only in Dunedin, but throughout New Zealand. At the same time, however, the association was not in a position financially to pay for the services of a coach. The game was deteriorating at the present lime, and unless an improvement was made it would lie only a matter of time before it went out of existence. Before the discussion lapsed, Mr Anderson intimated his intention of sending a letter to the manager of the English team (Mr C. Wreford Brown) before his departure from New Zealand asking him to explore the possibilities of securing coaches from England and a (cam of schoolboys going to England, the lour to bo financed by the English Union.
