EXPERIMENTAL FARM
ESTABLISHMENT A POSSIBILITY POPULARITY OF ANNOUNCEMENT The announcement that an experimental farm would probably be established in Otago in the near future was made last night by Mr F. M. Smith at a meeting of the agricultural section of the Otago branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand. “I don’t know whether I am speaking out of school,” Mr Smith said, “ but I expect to see an experimental farm established here in the near future. It is a pity that criticism has been levelled at such farms in the past, as in the case of the Galloway farm. This was established to test the possibilities of dairying in Central Otago. The farm was not a commercial enterprise; it was not supposed to pay. The various experiments entailed extra cost and labour, all of which was naturally debited to the farm. Nevertheless, throughout irrigated areas to-day dairying is being carried on successfully and 35 times as much cream is being produced as . 15 years ago.” Mr J. W, Woodcock, of Wellington, staled that an experimental farm in Otago would make work much easier than carrying out experiments on individual farms. “ I am very pleased, to hear these remarks about an experimental farm," said the chairman (Mr W. Stewart), “ and I presume Mr Smith means we are to get it. It should do a lot of good in this part of the country.”
