GAMING HOUSE RAID
FIFTY-FIVE MEN ARRESTED SUSTENANCE MEN INCLUDED COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE iPkb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 21. Of the 55 men arrested in a gaming house raid on Friday night 49 were charged in the Police Court to-day, six having been fined on Saturday.
Harry Williams, a seaman and caretaker, pleaded guilty to using the premises as a common gaming house, and was fined £3O.
v The others were charged with being found on the premises. Two, who did not appear, were each fined £5, as also were 18 men who had previously been convicted. The remainder were each fined £2 and costs.
The magistrate (Mr Wyvern Wilson) commented on the number of men drawing sustenance who had been found in gaming houses. “ This is a matter that should receive the attention of the authorities,” he said. *' If these men abuse that privilege by wasting the money they draw in sustenance I think sustenance money should be paid them in nonnegotiable coupons. It is not right to the rest of the community that they should waste the money given them by their country.”
