For almost an hour after the running of the last race at the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting at Epsom on Saturday, a large section of the crowd of 12,000 demonstrated its disapproval of the result. Hooting and jeering drowned a measure of applause that greeted the horses as they returned to the birdcage, the winner, King's Play, being sorted out for this display of unpopularity. The demonstration was maintained until the horse was led from the pen, and renewed with greater vigour as dusk approached and the driver. M. Stewart, left the stewards' room after an inquiry had been opened. Payment of the dividends was withheld. King's Play had given an indifferent display in the Adams Memorial Cup Handicap for which it was returned favourite. In the last race, the Cornwall Handicap. Kirg's Play started third favourite on the win machine and sixth on the place. At first a majority of the crowd showed their hostility, but when the stewards' meeting ended and it was announced that the inquiry would be concluded on Monday approximately 2000 expectant dividend recipients remained on the course.
