TWO CENTURIES
IDDON AND OLDFIELD LANCASHIRE’S TOTAL 443 MOLONEY GETS FIVE WICKETS (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the New Zealand cricket team.) PRESTON, June 17. The New Zealanders spent an arduous day in the field. The wicket was, rather unexpectedly, totally without vice, conditions being heartbreaking for the bowlers. All Lowry’s ingenious handling of the attack was without result. The batsmen were in command all day. Paynter and Iddon continued their brilliant partnership without the semblance of misadventure before lunch. Paynter was out first over after resumption, and Iddon soon followed. Four wickets were then down for 251.
Oldfield consolidated the county’s position with a sparkling century. Moloney’s slows were the most impressive feature of the attack, and would have been more effective if there had been more adequate support in the field, where the strain of a heavy day and a hot sun was apparent till after tea.
Donnelly took over the slow lefthand bowling after Vivian had pulled a leg muscle, and maintained accuracy, but was not rewarded with success.
Cowie was full of vim, despite the easy wicket. Tindill fielded for Vivian, taking a brilliant catch at the boundary at the close of the innings. Preston had a half holiday for the match, which was the first international fixture for the town. It drew a crowd of about 7000. There is a strong possibility that the wicket will break up to-morrow, presenting a difficult task for the New Zealanders. NEW ZEALAND THREE FOR 51 LONDON, June 18. (Received June 19, at 1.45 a.m.) Play was resumed this morning. The wicket is good, but the weather is overcast.
