NEW WORKS PLANNED
CITY COUNCIL’S PROPOSALS ROAD THROUGH SANDHILLS Plans for the extension of Tahuna road from the Tainui School to Minto street, Anderson’s Bay, through the sandhills are outlined in the report of the Works Committee to be presented to the City Council on Monday night. This work, which is estimated to provide work for 20 men for 25 weeks at a cost of £4700, is being carried out as part of the plan announced by the Acting Minister of Labour (Mr P. C. Webb) following his conference with representatives of the City Council in Dunedin last week. The work carries a full wage subsidy from the Employment Fund. “Arrangements have been completed with the Peninsula County Council to carry out the formation of Tahuna road.” states the committee’s report. “ This is a boundary road and the council undertakes the future maintenance of the roadway and also to erect a fence to prevent stock which may be driven along the road from wandering into the cemetery.” Another undertaking which has been authorised in the same locality is the improving of Tomahawk road between the Anderson’s Bay terminus and the south end of Minto street. The proposed improvements, states the report of the committee, include the construction of kerbing and guttering, widening and walling, and preparing surface for and paving the carriageway over the whole length with tarred macadam The estimated cost of the work is £ 2800, which will be a charge against the petrol tax vote. Plans for the improvement of Tomahawk road between Minto street and Tomahawk bridge, which portion of the road is also maintained by the council, will be put in hand at an early date.
