GORE RACING CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT (From Our Own Correshonuenti GORE, June 18. The annual report of the committee of the Gore Racing Club, to be submitted at the annual meeting on June 23, states:—After allowing a sum of £407 for depreciation of buildings, plant and other fixed assets, a sum of £IBO7 has been added to the capital account, making a favourable balance of £15,139. The cash assets are represented by a net balance at current credit of £592 Is 4d, Invercargill debentures £6OO, fixed deposit £ISOO and Post Office Savings Bank deposits £SOO. Thus £2600 is interest-earning. The spring meeting held last year produced a profit of £1879 and the February meeting £l4l. Some concern is felt by the committee at the decreasing returns from the summer meeting. There is no doubt that this is the effect of the unjustifiable intrusion of another Southland meeting between the Dunedin Cup meeting and Gore, and steps will be taken to bring this unsatisfactory state of affairs to the notice of the Racing Conference. The sum of £4200 was given in stakes for the year, representing an increase of £540 on the stakes given the previous year. The wimand-place svstem of betting on the totalisator was adhered to, and the machine handled £54,586 10s, against £40,373 10s the previous year. The win machine handled £25,507 and the place machine £29 079 10s. Close attention to the club’s appointments has been paid by the Works and Track Committee during the year, the sum of £219 having been spent on maintenance and repairs. The main race track has been the subject of much favourable comment from visiting owners and trainers, and is being kept up to a high standard. Permanent work involving the expenditure of £786 has been carried out, including the construction of concrete steps on the lawn and fronting the grand stand, a new judge's box, pump-house and pump for water supply available for washing horses, a sand roll under cover and a new mower for the lawn and main track. Once again a large number of horses were trained on the local tracks, making heavy demands on the facilities which the club is able to offer. New stabling and sheds for implements are required, and a proposal to improve the front entrance to the lawn and enclosures is at present under consideration. , . The number of club members is 95. six having been added to the register during the year and five removed. During the year the club lost an ardent supporter and life member in the person of the late Mr E. A. Pigeon and since the close of the year the death has occurred of Mr L. T. Symes. who was also a life member. The following candidates have been nominated to fill the various offices for the ensuine vear:—President, Mr J. B. Nicol; vice-presidents, Messrs J., T. Marlin and F. Wallis, jun.: committee— Messrs J. A. S. Aitken, M. Green, J E, Rogers. P. G. Ross and G. W. Whittingham. As the number of candidates does not exceed the number of vacancies to be fillc all will be declared elected.
