ART CRITIC’S DEATH
Mr Frank Vane Philipson Rutter, the well-known art critic, who had served the Sunday Times in that capacity f(tf 34 years, died recently in his sleep Jft the ago of 61. Born at Putney, Be was the son of Mr Henry Rutter,’ a solicitor, and was educated at Merchant Taylors’ School and Queen's College, Cambridge. He studied art in several capitals, and from 1912 to 1917 was curator of the Leeds Art Gallery. Mr Rutter founded the Allied Artists’ Association in 1903, and for eight years was its chairman. His literary output was on a considerable scale, for in addition to writing 16 books on art and architecture, he was also active as an editor. At his home in Golders Green ho had a wonderful collection of modern paintings, drawings, and etchings. His death represents the loss of one to whose genial personality were added great gifts of artistic perception.
