THE OLDEST ODDFELLOW
PIONEER OF OTAGO/ i ' NINETY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, June 18. Generally acclaimed to be the world’s oldest living Manchester Unity Oddfellow, Mr Andrew Liddle, an Otago pioneer, to-day-celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday with his son at Temuka. Mr Liddle landed at Port Chalmers 79 years ago, and with the exception of a short period in Auckland has lived all his life in the South Island. He was in Nelson at the time of the Mangatupa murders in 1866, and vividly recalls the excitement they created. In 1882 he went from Christchurch to Winton, where he was later Mayor. By 1875 he had occupied all the offices of the Manchester Lodge in Canterbury, including that of provincial grand master, and in that year he took the purple degree. In February of this year he completed 71 years’ membership.
