Holiday Activity

The observance of the King’s Birthday yesterday blended admirably with the holiday spirit that invariably pervades the city during Winter Show Week, and the attractions which are provided in generous measure especially for country visitors al this time of the year receive a greater patronage through the leisure afforded city people. The Winter Show itself was naturally the rendezvous of a large number of persons eager to see this illustration of the agricultural and pastoral wealth of the province, as well as those who desired to while away an hour or two in the amusements provided there, and the marked improvement in the weather attracted large crowds to the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting at Wingatui. Theatres also experienced a good day, and all those meetings, conferences, and other functions which are held in such abundance during this week received their share of attention. In the city and suburbs many flags were flown in observance of the King's Birthday, and a note of colour was seen on the wharves, where ships in port were dressed with bunting in honour of the occasion. Overseas Mail The air mail despatched from Dunedin on May 18 reached London on June 6. Revision of Agricultural Course A preliminary exchange of views between the staffs of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, and Massey Agricultural College has taken place with the object of modifying the agricultural degree course so as to bring it more into line with present-day requirements and to co-ordinate teaching activities. This was reported to the Board of Governors of Lincoln College by the director (Professor E. R. Hudson), who stated that the matter was not yet sufficiently far advanced to enable any concrete proposals to be put before the board. Search for Missing Girl A fruitless search was carried out yesterday morning by Sergeant Boulton. of the North Dunedin police force, and a \roop of Boy Scouts under Scoutmaster Beauchamp, for Olga Valerie Bentley, the 20-year-old girl who has been missing from her home since Friday morning. The search was conducted in and around the Pelichet Bay Gully, but no trace of the missing girl was found. That Guilty Feeling The well-intentioned efforts of the City Council’s traffic officers to warn children at one of the Christchurch schools recently about the equipment on their bicycles were defeated by what must have been an organised effort. Shortly before mid-day the department’s car, equipped with loudspeaker, drew up outside a school, and as the children came out for lunch began to broadcast warnings regarding brakes and other necessary equipment. For nearly a quarter of an hour the car waited, broadcasting at intervals; but no young cyclists put in an appearance. Later it was found that a consciousness of the deficiencies of their machines had led the children to wait in the bicycle shed until the car had departed, and then they broke records getting to their homes. Pres* Advertising Best “We advertise in the press," said the chairman (Mr E. A. Batt) at the meeting of the Automobile Association (Wellington), “ and it meets our needs,” when the executive, after discussing a proposal for radio advertising, turned it down. Government Spending “I am not going to say much about this Government’s expenditure because it has not had long enough to waste much yet,” said Professor A. H. Tocker, attacking Socialism in an address to the Christchurch Accountant Students’ Society. Later, he drew an example from public works in New Zealand to illustrate an argument that Socialist Governments were liable to spend money where it was not justified. He asked- where was the market to justify the South Island Main Trunk and Napier-Gisborne railways. He doubted whether that market existed, yet under the capitalist system, without Government interference, these railways would certainly not have been built unless the community definitely needed them.

Drinking at Dancei Many of the young people with whom he had come in contact had had their most serious adolescent maladjustment outside a dance hall, said Mr J. H. Ledgerwood in an address to the New Plymouth Rotary Club. He was not condemning dancing, which, under good control, could be a delightful thing, nor was he condemning private and temperate drinking. He was simply observing that in an increasing degree young people at dances were led to believe by those who should know better that no dance could be successful unless there was " spotting " before, during, and after the event. Port in South Westland f Although a Government surveyparty is reported to have made observations necessary for the construction of a harbour at Jackson's Bay, in South Westland. the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) indicated on Tuesday that a report would be obtained on the timber resources of the district before it was decided to construct a harbour. "The building of a harbour is under consideration," the Minister said, " and, we are getting a report on the timber resources there to see if it is economic to build a harbour. If the timber is worth tapping and shows promise of a decent return to the nation, it will be favourably considered. But we must be quite confident that it is justifiable to spend money on development there." The Arbitration Court will sit on Monday, June 14, at Christchurch in order to discuss the matter of the; waterside workers' dispute. Fuller particulars are advertised elsewhere in this issue.
